Residents of the village of Cayes Didier, near Mapou, Haiti, walk by a mapou tree. The waterlogged village of Mapou, surrounded by denuded hills, has only a few of the namesake trees left. The few remaining trees saved villagers who clung to them as crushing torrents of water ripped through the town last week.
