The original town of Suzhou is surrounded by a moat and crisscrossed by canals like the one at left. Many residents have a street running in front of their house and water flowing behind it. In the last decade the city established two large development zones beyond the moat. Below, the Pueschels and some students toured commercial Nanging Road in Shanghai one night. The Pueschels were the only westerners among perhaps 200,000 Chinese. No police were present in the area because there is evidently no need.
