The classrooms at Suzhou Middle School are similar to those in the United States, except for class size; most have 55 students. Student desks are lined up in rows facing the front and the teacher. In the younger grades, boys and girls tend to gravitate to their own gender as in our classrooms and playgrounds here, an issue not so important to the older, more serious students.
