Leslie Scally throws her arms up in excitement at the end of her
six-month trip hiking the entire 2,167-mile Appalachian Trail. The
northern route of the trail ends at Mount Katahdin in Maine's
Baxter State Park. Scally and a group of about 12 hikers started
the final ascent at 2:30 a.m. in order to reach the peak just after
sunrise. The group stayed at the peak for only 1 1/2 hours because
of the 40-degree weather and 30 mph to 40 mph winds.
