Letter to the editor: Get rid of football

To the editor:

Your recommendation to fire KU’s football coach was short-sighted, another example of rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. Why not encourage the KU leadership to make a bold, progressive and correct decision and simply ax the entire football program! Surely our doctor-chancellor understands the awful toll football takes on the human brain, not to mention the brain-cell loss after the drunken revelry among the few remaining fans.

In lean economic times, throwing millions more dollars on improving the stadium or hiring a new coach to orchestrate more of this violent entertainment borders on insanity. It doesn’t take a prophet to realize that sooner or later the brain-damaged gladiator-victims of the modern pigskin coliseum are going to file a class-action lawsuit against those who aided and abetted this slaughter. Reading the innards of the defeated Jayhawk clearly shows that it’s time for KU to hang up the football helmet for good.
