Letter to the editor: More to the story

To the editor:

I, too, love Lawrence and attend the Fiddling and Picking Championships in South Park every year. I’d like to add some additional information to Larry Carter’s letter about the man carrying a cardboard sign that said “smoke crack – worship Satan” who sat in front of one of the concert stages. I was about 50 feet away from the event, and Mr. Carter’s rendition is absolutely correct except for details at the end of the situation. I think those details are important.

When the man refused to put down his sign and several people from the audience and staff sat in front of him to block the words, I was so impressed! However, he did not just cave within minutes and leave. One of the women sitting in front of him grabbed his sign and took it near a staff tent and sat on it. The man who owned the sign then calmly walked back near the tent and sat down. While he was sitting quietly, a police car pulled up in the street, having apparently been called by someone in the audience or a staff member. The police officer stayed in his car until the man tried to take his sign back and was refused. The officer then walked over and apparently asked the man to move on, which he did.

Kudos to those who sat to block the sign and to the Lawrence police officer who calmly responded.

Baldwin City
