I've seen a couple of partials, but not a full one. Seen a full lunar eclipse though.

Linda Aikins 9 years, 5 months ago

yep! Went completely dark. Word on the streets was that the chickens suffered the most.

Jayhawk226 9 years, 5 months ago

Nah, I had stared directly at the sun as a child for extended periods of time...and I'm now I'm legally blind.

I'm lucky to have been able to type this comment.

Phew!

Grundoon Luna 9 years, 5 months ago

I, too, have observed partials, but haven't been in the right part of the world to observe a total. It would be way cool to observe such an event.

Grundoon Luna 9 years, 5 months ago

Jay,

My mamma always told me not to look in to the eyes of the sun, right before she rolled up in a duece . . .

enochville 9 years, 5 months ago

I have seen a full solar eclipse when I was in elementary school in Georgia, and I have seen a couple partials. I have also seen lunar eclipses in which the Moon turned red.

sgtwolverine 9 years, 5 months ago

Some say Wal-Mart itself blocks a significant amount of light.

sunflower_sue 9 years, 5 months ago

Azure, did you tell her: "But Momma, that's where the fun is!"

Yep, saw my first total in the sixth grade. We all made the "pin cards" and went outside to watch. Seen a few partials. Seen lunar ones as well...for some reason, probably coincidence, during one total lunar it really got the owls going. Saw a great "sun dog" last summer during a T-Bones game. That was really cool. It lasted for well over an hour.

I saw one in junior high. It got us out of math class.

sgtwolverine 9 years, 5 months ago

Unfortunately, I have never gotten to observe an eclipse. Just pictures. Oh well. Maybe one day.

sunflower_sue 9 years, 5 months ago

I flew my home-built helio-glider that runs completely off of kitchen compost to Turkey yesterday to witness the eclipse.

Seriously!

And then, I took photos of it on my homemade camera that doubles as a solar-powered hand-held teleporter that didn't work so well during the eclipse but that didn't matter because I was just so darned happy to be eating Turkish Delight with a bunch of people that thought I was an alien from another planet.

Thanks.

sgtwolverine 9 years, 5 months ago

Bob, did you observe a solar eclipse from the surface of the sun or something?

I hear it's a real hotspot for eclipses...

Ceallach 9 years, 5 months ago

All we have to do is hang around Lawrence until August 21, 2017 and we'll have a front row seat :)

sunflower_sue 9 years, 5 months ago

Sorry TOB, my knowledge of Turkish delight is limited to "The Chronicles of Narnia."

MD, Who is harley? Do you need to lay off the "Turkish Delight?"

I'm gonna go outside and wait for the wind to carry me away. Maybe I'll tie a bunch of colorful ribbons to my feet and people will think I'm one of those human-looking kites that got loose. That'll be my fun for the day.

sunflower_sue 9 years, 5 months ago

Cea, will you save me a seat next to you? I'll bring the T.D. and the nifty NASA goggles.

Grundoon Luna 9 years, 5 months ago

You bet I did, sunny sue!!

Marion, you're so vain! You prob'ly think this post is about you.

Pass the Turkish delight from the left hand side . . .

sunflower_sue 9 years, 5 months ago

Azure, According to Jeeves:

A sundog (or sun dog) is a relatively common atmospheric optical phenomenon associated with the reflection/refraction of sunlight by the numerous small ice crystals that make up cirrus or cirrostratus clouds. Sundogs typically appear as a bright and sometimes colorful spot in the sky at a position 22 degrees to the left and/or right of the sun. Sundogs are closely related to, and sometimes appear together with, a halo. The scientific name for the phenomenon is parhelion.

translation: When it looks like there is more than one sun in the sky. Way cool!

sunflower_sue 9 years, 5 months ago

MD, I'm a dope!

TOB, Just give me the straight dope...what is it?

canyon_wren 9 years, 5 months ago

My grandma used to make Turkish Delight. It's kind of weird--like cubes of dried out Jell-O with powdered sugar on it. The first time I tried making it, it turned out fine, but I never had success again

I recall a full lunar eclipse--this must have been around 1990 (I didn't read the article yet, and it may have mentioned what year the last one was). It was pretty cool! (No sun made it cooler, of course!)

Went hiking on a full moon night in June 1992 up to Delicate Arch in Arches National Park without flashlights, thinking we could find our way home by moonlight, but it turned out there was a total lunar eclipse that night. After the moon came back out, there was heavy cloud cover, so we practically had to feel our way down over the slickrock.

canyon_wren 9 years, 5 months ago

I was writing when you got to the part about the kites. I actually went out and flew one the other day. Had had it for about 4 years, but had forgotten how you fix the string. Finally looked it up in the World Book encyclopedia. Of course I made a tail with an old strip of sheeting with those little bows tied on it. It went up wonderfully and was a thrilling experience I haven't had for a long time (some of us are very easily entertained, aren't we?). I think everyone should do that every few years.

sunflower_sue 9 years, 5 months ago

TOB, You are sleep deprived from baby Bob! My "dope" pun was totally wasted on you! ;) You better take a nap before the 'nado comes tonight!

sgtwolverine 9 years, 5 months ago

Daily feasts in the Ottoman court? They knew how to eat!

Now, if they'd only thought twice about naming their empire after footstools...

sunflower_sue 9 years, 5 months ago

et tu Md? I should steer clear of puns! They obviously aren't my forte.

Ceallach 9 years, 5 months ago

Turkish Delight -- direct from Canada, how funny is that? Speaking of Canada, where is ms_canada? Did she go all rowdy and get herself banned while I was away?

sun_sue: I plan to be here, in case I'm not, let out an extra "yah hoo" for me :)

OTS QOTD: Yes, I have seen a total solar eclipse, it was awesome! I think it is humbling to see the results of chance plus time setting up our solar system, everything spinning and circling yet staying out of each other's way. Yes sir, one would almost think chance knew what it was doing :-P

sunflower_sue 9 years, 5 months ago

Ms_C is in Cali with her sis.

Cea, I swear you just started making me sing "When the moon is in the seventh house..." puke

avhjmlk 9 years, 5 months ago

We got out of American History when I was in 8th grade to see one. Granted, none of us had polarized glasses, but I do recall something about pin cards...I just don't remember how they work...

sunflower_sue 9 years, 5 months ago

My sis is left handed. How will this affect her...all this passing and so forth?

sunflower_sue 9 years, 5 months ago

avhelementarymydearwatsonjmlk, Use 2 cards, one with a pin hole in it. Hold the pin-hole card above and the other card below it and you will see on the bottom card the "moon" move in front of the "sun."

canyon_wren 9 years, 5 months ago

s-sue--I am on my 4th Kirk Mitchell book. I have had to get some through InterLibrary Loan. He's great. Thanks for passing that info along.

mmmmmmm brownies.

Ya'll kill me!

heeheee :)

BTW, thanks alot. Now I've got "pass the dutchie on the left hand side" stuck in my head. And that's the only line I know. Grrrrr.

badger 9 years, 5 months ago

I've said it before, and I'll say it again:

You people crazy.

And yet, deeply amusing.

acg - all I remember is that the next line is kind of gibberish.

Grundoon Luna 9 years, 5 months ago

I'M NOT A MAN, BABY!!! I have so many times been referred to as a "he" on this board. Is it how I write? Well, I have said that I am more man than a lot of the men I know and I did do a drag show as a man when I worked at the gay bar, but I was born a woman and I still am a woman. Judging from the attention I get from males, I must be a fairly attractive one, which at times was a problem at the bar becuase I'm not gay either. Really!! I have delivered two children from my body. I swear it.

I believe it's pass the "doche" which I think is a cookie.

sunflower_sue 9 years, 5 months ago

black_monolith...is that you, Cory?

canyon, you're welcome

gootsie, katie...you're crackin me up

Md, yes, you're old! (But I watched Haley's comet from the hood of my car...so I guess I'm old, too.)

Cea, "when peace will rule the planets..."

Grundoon Luna 9 years, 5 months ago

Oh, and the last lunar eclipse was at last month's full moon, though it was too cloudy to see it. I had seen one before but it's been a while. Pretty neat stuff. I saw a huge ring around the moon when I was in Cali for the summer in '82. That was cool.

sunflower_sue 9 years, 5 months ago

badger, yes! Just gibberish... Pass the Dutchie on the left hand side Pass the Dutchie on the left hand side It a gonna burn, give me music make me jump and prance It a go done, give me the music make me rock in the dance

Hey all, I've seen Azure Attitude and she's one hot babe! Almost wish I were gay. ;)

avhjmlk 9 years, 5 months ago

Azure, it's not a cookie. It's a joint.

acg 9 years, 5 months ago

a dutchie isn't a cookie, it's a splif, man!.... or woman. Don't you ever watch I love the 80's? :)

acg 9 years, 5 months ago

BTW, it's just started storming here in Topeka. RUN, RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!!

Grundoon Luna 9 years, 5 months ago

That's what I always thought, avjmlk, and I am sure that it's true, but on VH1 they were trying to say it was something else, probably an attempt to appease those that would object to the weed. Last time I'll buy in to anything on VH1.

Thanks, Sue! You're pretty hot stuff yourself, I must say.

I think it may be that azure being blue, it is associated with males. In this case it is my politial leanings and my attitude. I'm not one of those fluffy bunny dems, I'm in your face. Oh, how I miss tormenting Hoofy! But I think he's back on the board traveling incognito.

Grundoon Luna 9 years, 5 months ago

and peeeeeeeeace will guide the planeeeeeeets and love will rule the stars. this is tha dawning of the age of Aquarius, age of Aquariuuuuuuuus . . ..

Ceallach 9 years, 5 months ago

and love will steer the stars thanks a lot sue, my day has been launched into the age of aquarius -- no, wait, that's not a bad thing!!! Thanks, sue!!

I also saw Halley's Comet in 86, AND I had a chance to see it projected on the ceiling of the planetarium in the National Air and Space Museum in DC -- what an experience -- felt like you were hitchhiking through the galaxy :)

Ceallach 9 years, 5 months ago

Don't let Katie the Weather Woman hear about sunspot 865, she will have us evacuating the planet.

Nachtwolf 9 years, 5 months ago

Did anybody else notice that the kid on the right side of the picture included in the article has his sunglasses on upside down?

badger 9 years, 5 months ago

Don't blame me because the eclipse made you people loons.

I'm just being considerate and not using up a bunch of Kansan bandwidth.

If it makes it any better, I think the loony is universal today. About three minutes ago, my co-workers started throwing dry erase board markers and eraser at one another. Every so often, something flies over my head. I've put my coffee in a covered cup, just to be safe.

Sun goes away and ever'body just gets stoned...

sunflower_sue 9 years, 5 months ago

I go to do some actual work and e_m shows up to the party? Last time I do anything constructive! ;)

kansas_prairieland 9 years, 5 months ago

Wow! That's a pretty racist thing to say, "Ben LaDin"!!

And I see that your moniker is new here.....kinda makes me wonder who you really are! Since you know that your "Ben LaDin" moniker is going to get zapped here shortly!!

RonBurgandy 9 years, 5 months ago

Man, this board is crazy today. With all the green smoke and brownies in here, I can only imagine what would happen if the monikers were all messed up again.

Ben_LaDin 9 years, 5 months ago

What was wrong with my comment about the glasses? I get the second half, but the first half was an honest guess. I said it was because they were from Africa. The education isn't as prevalent, there, as it is here, and it IS a little kid.

sgtwolverine 9 years, 5 months ago

There might even be real-world chaos if no one could access the site for a couple hours again.

Is the OTS board addicting?

EirishHawk 9 years, 5 months ago

Off subject for today - relates to previous posts. If it is not for you, please excuse, if it is, you will know it.

"I am having a friend post this in order to keep my privacy and that of my husband.

Thank you all for your wonderfully positive comments and support. I'm going to braille them so that on the rough days, I can remember that there are people who care and "are in my corner," so to speak. I'll have my performances posted as they occur and I hope to see you all at the venues of your choice. Thank you again for your positive response. It will help me keep "showing up for life," even with its challenges."

kansas_prairieland 9 years, 5 months ago

Attention LJ World....

Would you please explain to me how it is that "Ben LaDin" types/submits a blatantly racist post....and it's just deleted??!!

He's not banned/zapped for good??!!

Prod_The_Goat 9 years, 5 months ago

I didn't see the comment posted, but was it serious or a joke? By the way he responded again, I get the feeling it was a joke.

avhjmlk 9 years, 5 months ago

Eirish--

Thanks for posting that message. I know lots of us have sent Lynda notes of support through various channels.

Ceallach 9 years, 5 months ago

k_p, don't forget to ask why Ceallach's post was removed :)

kansas_prairieland 9 years, 5 months ago

Hey, "Prod".....I really don't think that it matters very much whether or not it was a joke.........it was a racist comment....period.

Ceallach 9 years, 5 months ago

Thanks, MD, you are probably right.

Prod, there are some days when the slightest thing will get a comment removed, but bennie boy was waaaaaaay out of line and I am as shocked as k_p that the poster wasn't banned.

MD, if it's the e_m I know, nothing, and I mean nothing can make him timid :)

badger 9 years, 5 months ago

Maybe BL didn't get banned because those were his only two posts, so the LJ figured they'd give him a chance to learn from the mistake?

I think they reserve banning for the really consistent offenders who don't ever seem to learn about what's OK to say and what's not. People seem to push things for a while before they actually get zapped.

So, BL, now you know that neither race nor continent of of origin is going to be considered an appropriate reason to cite for why someone might do something 'backwards'.

If neither of your comments was intended to be offensive, it might've helped if you'd explained that when making them?

I don't know, just taking shots in the dark here.

sgtwolverine 9 years, 5 months ago

I just hope they don't start banning animals. Then we're in trouble, badger.

EirishHawk 9 years, 5 months ago

Thanks to all of you. Behind all the quips and pun the OTS posters are a great bunch! Even without sight, Lynda saw through your disguises :)

miasac 9 years, 5 months ago

Back to an earlier subject: I think I saw a sun dog last week, but I had never heard of them before. I guess you learn something new everyday.

acg 9 years, 5 months ago

OMG, watch the song after total eclipse of the heart. That one's even better. I laughed so hard I almost trickle peed a little.

kcwarpony 9 years, 5 months ago

In grade school, we made the little peek hole cards to see an eclipse, partial I think, got all excited and then:it got cloudy:(

Let the sun shine, Let the sun shine in, The sunnnnn shine innnn:..

Any brownies left? I know I'm late for the party...

RonBurgandy 9 years, 5 months ago

Better not disrupt The Office. It was bad enough a couple of weeks ago when they ruined the Simpsons and Family Guy for me.

Ceallach 9 years, 5 months ago

It will get even slower as 5:00 draws near, some will have to scramble to give the impression they've been productive today -- not me of course !!!! It's just a coincidence that I will not be available again until after 5:00 :):)

l_eustacy 9 years, 5 months ago

I think that the poster, B_L is a student and the address shows that it is from a local school. I think his question that is left on the board seems to validate that as well.

kansas_prairieland 9 years, 5 months ago

Who's B_L?

And hey, I see quite a few posts removed today!--Including monolith's post!! Monolith doesn't say anything, I don't think? Meanwhile, Ben LaDin says something racist in nature...and he only gets deleted and not banned.

Man! I just don't understand how these LJ World monitors operate!

kansas_prairieland 9 years, 5 months ago

Oh, yeah! LOL!

So...a racist student, huh?

How sad.

sunflower_sue 9 years, 5 months ago

BunE, I'm glad my daughter got bored and left the room before the blue jogging suit slipped a little...how very odd.

OMB, If you like ABBA, you must try A-Teens "The ABBA Generation." It's all the ABBA songs you love only "on speed." My niece got me hooked a few years ago (on the cd, not speed) and now it's my house cleaning/exercize cd. :)

Had an early dinner at Aladin Cafe tonight because if we're all gonna die like Katie says, I wanted to die happy!!

Ceallach 9 years, 5 months ago

and I was deleted for saying bennie boy was a jerk!! go figure.........

Ceallach 9 years, 5 months ago

I have heard that Lawrence is attracting a lot of homeless folk, but it seems we are also attracting a lot of trolls. We've had some real sick puppies lately!!!

Nachtwolf 9 years, 5 months ago

I'm going to have to apologize for Ben_LaDin. He's a friend of mine that I showed this board to during lunch, today, and well, he's a little bit off in the head sometimes. He's not really a racist, but more often than not, he says things he should not be saying, and uses terms he should be using. He takes things too far, a lot of the times. If he does anything else like that, just notify me and I'll talk to him.

Nachtwolf 9 years, 5 months ago

No, I don't think he came back.

You know, on second thought, just ban him if you haven't already. He's only going to cause trouble.

Nachtwolf 9 years, 5 months ago

Oh, and as a correction to my post about him, I meant to say, "uses terms he should NOT be using."

I typoed and forgot the "not."

bearded_gnome 9 years, 5 months ago

MD, the country that banned kites, was pakistan, following several deaths of children flying them during some national celebrations. still not completely clear, but something about the kite strings...but several deaths and it was a rather big national outcry.

first time I get to look at this board, you have over 160 posts, and its about the eclipse...well at least the question was! wow, you guys get an A+ for effort.
thanks and welcome irishhawk., for posting that note from her.

i'll pass on them brownies, they're probly stale by now anyway and I'm crazy enough without thc anyway: "this is your brain on pot" "this is gnome's normal brain!"

Oh no! We're infested with trolls and now one has attacked our gnome!

That's not nice.

bearded_gnome 9 years, 5 months ago

was this the "madman" in question? and that raises an important question for our time, how come "madman" is common but "madwoman" is not. I think we men should be protesting in the streets that women should have equal billing and men not be discriminated against by disproportionate "madness."

yes, the kite situation in pakistan was dreadful. my friend there told me some of it and it has forced a complete change in one of their national celebrations which used to feature kite flying.
