“I try to eat a balanced diet and work out. I don’t like to go to the doctor, but if I keep myself healthy, then I shouldn’t have to.”

Photo of Andy Zell

“I go to the doctor about every six months or if I get sick. I just started working out about two months ago, but I don’t pay much attention to my diet.”

Photo of Alison Accurso

“Not much, to be honest. I’ll go to the doctor if I’m sick, but only if it gets bad. I don’t work out much either, and I usually stay up until 3 a.m. or so.”

Photo of Ryan MacFarlane

“Enough to keep myself breathing and keep myself from starving. I only go to the doctor when I really need to.”

I haven't been ill in years thanks to proper hygiene, except when I got motion sickness on one of the local roundabouts

Purell 9 years, 7 months ago

no kidding A_asinbeer, you got spanked I think Hannibal ate you up

audvisartist 9 years, 7 months ago

Oral health is VERY important for maintaining overalll general health. There's lots of data that points to this. If you want to know more about oral health and oral hygiene, visit the Douglas County Dental clinic website at http://www.dcdclinic.org The site is full of videos and animations covering a wide variety of oral health issues!

every morning i wake up and have 4 scrambled eggs and half a velveeta cheese brick. for lunch i can't eat anything but a small salad and for dinner i might have a nice kc strip or a burning green curry dish with lots of rice.

my wife can't stand to be near me for some reason but my dog won't leave me alone.

ps. how does someone know if they're lactose intolerant? what's a symptom?

gotta catch some ZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzz

b_asinbeer 9 years, 7 months ago

First post! First post!!! I eat whatever is cheap (hey, with my salary, you'll eat what you can get). But fruits and veggies are high on my list of things to eat more of when I do/if start making some more money.

The cancer cells floating around in the human body demand some undivided attention. If smoking is imperative so is Ambrotose(google it).

Broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage,Kale, blueberries,Kiwi, grapefruit, pineapple, grapes, red onion, garlic, Salmon and Tofu are great ways to keep life on track. Sipping Aloe Vera juice and eating plain yogurt daily are very good for the stomach/digestive system.

b_asinbeer 9 years, 7 months ago

darn....beaten by Purell....but thanks to roundabouts, I've been injury free from people who run stop signs. :o)

thunderbuns 9 years, 7 months ago

A lot.

So anyway, let's see if we can not use the letter "M" today for any of these posts. I think things will be quite interesting if we do. You see I haven't used that letter at all! And look how long this post is! Okay.....can anyone beat this? Look, still no letter "___". (See, you thought I'd use it there didn't you??!!) Okay, don't use that aweful letter during any posts!! It'll be fun to see who can do it and who can't. Beats answering another "tough" ljw question!!!

Okay, back to bed...........

(and I got up for this!!!!!????)

l_eustacy 9 years, 7 months ago

To stay healthy, I have become an obsessive compulsive hand washer. I also avoid roundabouts, especially on Halloween. I heard they are really evil that night.

I had to search, but I agree b_asinbeer. Lecter is too cunning, (I know him. He has an insane sense of humor and a genius IQ) It is very hard to tell when he is joking with you.

GreenEyedBlues 9 years, 7 months ago

I smoke menthol cigarettes to keep my air passages in pristine condition!

No seriously... Allison Accurso and I are on the same health regimen... except I try to avoid split ends. SNAP!

Just kidding. =P

Purell 9 years, 7 months ago

Kline, I thought the dateline or 20/20 said that raw oysters were at risk for stomach-upsetting bacteria. 1/10 oysters tested were above safe levels in bacteria. Be careful

bankboy119 9 years, 7 months ago

I don't really watch what I eat...just make sure to exercise and go to the gym.

quietgirl 9 years, 7 months ago

Until recently you still got the fish sandwiches in the blue styrofoam containers. Although I am sure it was the 'environmentally safe' styrofoam.

staff04 9 years, 7 months ago

Eat really crappy for breakfast--usually eggs, bacon, and buttered toast. From there out I take it pretty light. Salad for lunch on most days and a normal sized dinner low in carbs. Lots of green veggies...

In the gym four times a week. Still don't feel like I am healthy though...

sunflower_sue 9 years, 7 months ago

O_B, I was telling my nephews about those styrofoa_ boxes the other day!

Topic: I avoid Jefferson's Restaurant (I hear college students eat there). Lot's of hand sanitizer. I eat ho_e_ade yogurt daily. I give people who sneeze or cough (and don't try to cover it) really dirty looks.

I like to shop at Dillon's because they have those nifty sanitizing wipes to whipe down the cart.

I try to exercize daily. I avoid cleaning my house 'lest I should get black lung. Chocolate, coffee, and wine are all good for _ental health.

How was that, Thunderbuns?

harrierist 9 years, 7 months ago

I used to think all of it mattered til I saw the movie "The Big Country" that included an academy award winning performance by actor/folk singer Burl Ives. He was big as a house, smoked three Winston Churchill type cigars every day and drank a quart of Burbon every day. Well he lived to be 86. Thus our lives are govern by our genetics. If you want to see how ou will live and die, then look at your relatives and not this stupid fitness "experts."

avhjmlk 9 years, 7 months ago

s_s--you were great until you said "I avoid cleaning my house..."

I was really rooting for you.

And speaking of black lung disease (tangentially, naturally)...Did you know that Pepto Bismol (or other pink bismuth-containing medications) can cause black hairy tongue "disease" in some people?

Ceallach 9 years, 7 months ago

sun_sue: Excellent job!!

e_m: you just described my favorite breakfast!! Yum, and here I sit with my protein shake :(

For physical health I try to eat lots of veggies, salads, fruit, etc. I take extra vitamin c with my multi vitamins.

For mental health I moan, groan, rant and rave on the ljw article boards (particularly OTS).

For oral health (thanks for the info audvisartist) I try daily (at times moment to moment) to keep my language clean:)

I can't do diet drinks so I add lots of black pepper to my chicken fried steak w/cream gravy. [Remember Furr's chicken fried steak? I loved it - with fried potatoes and onions - covered with cream gravy.] hmmmm... my spirit loves the idea of only eating a healthy diet, but the flesh is weak. Where is the nearest Furr's Cafeteria anyway?

avhjmlk 9 years, 7 months ago

Cellach, you and my father-in-law need to get together. He's a devotee of the cafeteria restaurant, much to the dismay of most of the rest of the family.

avhjmlk 9 years, 7 months ago

O_ _ _b - It's one of those things you learn about in 8th grade Health when they're trying to convince you never to smoke. So, during my first set of law school finals a few years ago, when my stomach was twisted into the neatest knots, I was taking Pepto fairly regularly (2-3 times/day). After a few days, I woke up with a black tongue and it looked like all of my tastebuds were standing at attention.

Needless to say, I flipped out! After consulting a standard medical diagnostics book (maybe Nelson's Pediatrics...), we discovered that black hairy tongue disease can be related to medicines with bismuth.

So, I've never taken Pepto again. Besides, I'm not sure it was really doing that much to help anyway!

Ceallach 9 years, 7 months ago

avhjmlk: By the time you get to be our age, dismaying the rest of the family, is one of our favorite pass times :) Young'uns take life wayyyy to seriously :) All that worrying is bad for your health!

trueninetiesgirl 9 years, 7 months ago

lunacydetector here are some things i have seen in kids. lactose intolerant stomach cramps, throwing up shortly after milk, upset stomach, some even have lots of gas and bad cramps. this happens every time the eat dairy foods

Ceallach 9 years, 7 months ago

Your tongue isn't the only thing bismuth turns black.

trinity 9 years, 7 months ago

sure, i watch what i eat-from the fork/spoon/spork right in to my mouth.

carpe diem!

bearded_gnome 9 years, 7 months ago

Ceallach, had a very nice talk with my pakistani girl last night.

still looking for a skype usser[user] locally.

I eat a low carb diet. weren't we on this topic a couple of days ago. can OTS get better questions??????????

this morning's breakfast, since we're comparing, was: about a pound of well drained breakfast sausage, four slices of tomatos (I eat that at most breakfasts), three slices of wheatfield's bread toasted (main carb for the day), fruit was whole strawberries today.

earlier had 14oz of very strong coffee, the way I like it: strong and black, like a good woman.

how's that.

I am recovering from a major health problem and most of my day is taken up with caring for my health: two naps, walk for exercise (with gnomedog) etc.
good day all! see you later, and yes I used the letter "M" its in my na'm'e here, so had to.

... sung to the tune of beatle's "paperback writer" its the new lawrence song: "roundabout driver."

Ceallach 9 years, 7 months ago

I've never understood how watching what you eat is beneficial. Unless it is alive, then you should watch to be sure it doesn't get away. I'll leave those instructions to Hannibal :)

I heard on the news this morning that in New Jersey, registered sex offenders are not allowed out of their homes on Halloween, and are not allowed to open the door to or give candy to the trick or treaters. Good job NJ!!

sunflower_sue 9 years, 7 months ago

avhjndsfshfrwmlk, I heard that keeping your house too clean is bad for your kids' health. (Anyway, my neighbor comes over and tells me he could eat off my floors...then again, I've seen him eat a bug!)

I have young kids. Therefore, you can never really GET your house clean. Little germ breeders! Gotta love 'em!

e_m, the wrapper on my breakfast said: "Wheat toast. Serving suggestion: add flavor.)

bearded_gnome 9 years, 7 months ago

"eat off my floor" well you should make him do just that! good fiber source...

Ceallach 9 years, 7 months ago

I'm the one that started the "too clean is bad for your kids" saying, and I'm sticking by it. I'm also sticking to the countertop, table, refrigerator handle -- maybe it is time to clean again :):)

avhjmlk 9 years, 7 months ago

sun_sue--All I meant was that you put the "m" in "my", not that you weren't cleaning your house.

Mine's not all that clean, either. That's what having an independent 18mo. old daughter will do to a person!

wondering 9 years, 7 months ago

I wonder why so many bloggers daily mention the few roundabouts in the city. My advice (and a good one to keep you in positive physical and mental health) is get over it! Keeping a pet peeve constantly in your thoughts is detrimental.

avhjmlk 9 years, 7 months ago

Ah, but being able to gripe about something that's not too important, but entertaining at the same time, is a good outlet for frustration, and a good way to have fun (especially considering some of the comments that people are able to come up with--motion sickness...)

sunflower_sue 9 years, 7 months ago

avhjdnfgsdjkhgfdhff_lk, I'_ really not cleaning _y house! If things look dusty, I just turn on a fan.

Ceallach, You crack e up! Better be careful though, so_eone will run with that Sticky situation you've gotten yourself into. (_y bet's on e_!);)

avhjmlk 9 years, 7 months ago

Excellent news, sun_sue!

Gootsie--oh my, too much fun.

Is anyone else familiar with Elf Bowling and Elf Shuffleboard?

Ceallach 9 years, 7 months ago

It's always good policy to wash anything that gets sticky. There, that should take care of our resident "word twister(s)."

Gotta go to OP this afternoon, for work and not shopping :(:( Have a good afternoon and play nice

Aiko 9 years, 7 months ago

Oh the melodic voice of the late, great Burl Ives. it reminds me of Christmas!

ms_canada 9 years, 7 months ago

A few years back there was a documentary by a guy who claimed that laughter cured him of his cancer. Well after reading the board this am, I must be the healthiest person in my city at least. My wish would be that all of you young people would eat a healty diet and get lots of fresh air exercise and be as healthy as me when you reach my age. Long in the tooth I am. ceallach - does your great sense of humour come from your good health? And sunny sue - I know where yours comes from.

Linda Aikins 9 years, 7 months ago

Good Sue! I only got 59 on _y first try. A second atte_pt will happen soon.

avhjmlk 9 years, 7 months ago

But, somehow I managed to get two strikes. I haven't been able to get two in one game since! Beginner's luck...

thunderbuns 9 years, 7 months ago

I slurp down one bowl o' Cocoa Pebbles instead o' two. That's how I _anage _y health.

Oh, and by-the-by::.Great news! I've been hired by the ljw to do the OTS questions all next week! I'll be standing on the corner of 9th & _ass (just to be different) asking questions. Here's a sa_pling of ones I'm considering:

1) What size shoe do you wear? 2) Besides "Ti_e has co_e today" na_e one other song the Cha_bers Brothers did (no Googling!). 3) Do people ever co_e up to you? 4) Has your car ever backfired? 5) Will this post get removed by the site staff? 6) How often do you use the brakes on your car? 7) How do I get to Third Planet fro_ here? 8) Would you rather inhale or exhale? 9) How has the 14th century affected your life personally? 10) One lu_p or two?

Confrontation 9 years, 7 months ago

I exercise 5 or 6 times per week, watch what I eat, and make sure my spouse and I stay very "active." Burning calories can actually be quite enjoyable :)

sunflower_sue 9 years, 7 months ago

Thunderbuns, 1. 8 2. who? 3. so_eti_es 4. any _oons ago 5. naw 6. little as possible (don't want to wear them out) 7. take the "T" 8. h___.... 9.I'_ here 10. crea_, no sugar

Thanks, Gootsie. My boss got 112 on his first try. Jerk!

avhjmlk 9 years, 7 months ago

Whoops. _y boss got 112 on his first try. Jerk!

avhjmlk 9 years, 7 months ago

Speaking of missing letters (but now talking about missing bodies), have any of you ever tried the "Invisibles" game? Google search it. You try to identify movie scenes (stills of movies), except all of the bodies have been removed, so you see clothes, hats, glasses, etc, with no people inside of them!

Dixie Jones 9 years, 7 months ago

ok lost here, why are we avoiding the "M" letter today, god you guys have to keep me informed when im not here everyday....

avhjmlk 9 years, 7 months ago

I actually never play it any_ore. y sister told _e about it a long ti_e ago, and the whole concept of _issing ""'s _ade _e think about it.

avhjmlk 9 years, 7 months ago

Bla_e thunderbuns:

"So anyway, let's see if we can not use the letter "M" today for any of these posts.

(and I got up for this!!!!!????)"

Linda Aikins 9 years, 7 months ago

I've done the _issing faces _ovies thing. It is a blast! And harder than you think!

I'm doing the _issing _ because of Thunderbuns, and because of the _izzou ga_e this weekend. You know - _uck Fizzou. That is the level of intelligence I seek today.

Ceallach 9 years, 7 months ago

ms_canada: I'm not sure, it may be my medication :):)

Ceallach 9 years, 7 months ago

This board is addictive!!! Take a business trip for the afternoon and wonder, who's saying what about this or that. I'm to be pitied -- and if I'm not careful - fired :\

Jclarkson 9 years, 7 months ago

http://thecornking.blogspot.com/

Im going to manage my diet starting next week. Read my daily blog (just started today) about it. I haven't got an Official name for it yet. But For one week, im going to eat nothing but corn to see the scientific effects of it.

Ceallach 9 years, 7 months ago

Jclarkson: Be sure your corn is not loaded with antibiotics and growth hormones -- we know what a steady diet of that does to hogs:)

bent 9 years, 7 months ago

I signed up yesterday by mistake. Y'all have fun.

Jclarkson 9 years, 7 months ago

at this time, Creamed corn is allowed. Although Im undecided if I'll eat it.

bearded_gnome 9 years, 7 months ago

I think we chased off "Bent." shame on us!

I have a revolutionary idea; instead of us beefing about these truly lousey On the Street Questions, let's come up with our own.

would work like this: one [serious] suggestion per poster, submissions close at noon. voting until 6pm, one vote per poster. then the winning question we actually anser during the 'next day' OTS?

I think that would work; we would just have to insert gratuitous refs to that day's OTS question, and the next day's when we anser our own. what do you all think?

our own democracy! power to the people! voting is power, and we will take the power! ... "burn baby burn!" [how'd that get in there!]

sunflower_sue 9 years, 7 months ago

O_B, Saw the corn palace last year. Best two _inutes of _y life!

Ceallach 9 years, 7 months ago

g__ Sounds pretty good to _e.

Did all y'all happen to look at the discussion board for the _orrison article? Egads! Those bad boys were burning up the board all day. They be kicking a** and taking na_es!!! So I hurried back to our kinder, gentler board

This is y last post for the day so I thought I would de_onstrate _y ability to be a tea player by not using the forbidden consonant. Hope I found the_ all!
