Clearly the folks in question development need some help. Here's one for you...why not ask the people on the street how they can sleep at night knowing thousands of Iraqi civilians and American soldiers are dying in a war that is based upon deception and greed.

Why don't we try to think of practical things that we can do (aside from impeaching Bush) to support our troops. And then do them over this holiday week-end. I hear that phone cards are in high demand over there so I thought I would buy a few of them this week-end and donate them.

Show your disapproval by finding as many tax breaks and ways to stop paying the bloated bueracracy called government. Maybe once the ability to loot the pockets of taxpayers is no longer available, the money it spends will be a little better thought out.

Damn! Someone is really earning their money at the LJW. I want that job...Tomorrow the topic will be what cheese is your favorite.
I didn't weigh in on my fav. ice cream yesterday and I know everyone lost sleep last night wondering so (drum roll) It's "Chubby Hubby" by Ben & Jerry's!
"Extreme".... that is a hall of famer posting. much love.

I like anything with pecan, the classic rum and raisin, and caramel. Sorbet is also very nice. Sorbets are more refreshing than ice cream I think.

Hey GreenEyedBlues - tough call on Ally's name, especially given we don't know yours. Her surname is icelandic, like Bjrk. (Bjrk's surname is Gudmundsdottir.) The common -dottir ending means "daughter". The "j" in Dagbjart is pronounced like a "y", and the "a"s sound more like "aah" than just "a". So you can post my dollar to Australia, thanks ;-)

I was JUST thinking to myself, "what if those clever LJWorld On The Street Questionmakers actually busted out one of the questions we use to distract us from heated topics?"

I wonder if this will have a reverse effect and we'll start talking heavy politics. I hope not. HEY! Let's try not to use the "D" or "R" words today!

My favorite ice cream is Butter Pecan from Schwan's. I think the yellow coloring does it for me. It makes me think I'm eating a bunch of chunky butter, but it tastes good so there's no guilt or nausea.

P.S. I'll give someone a dollar if they can pronounce Ally's last name! What a mouthful!

"banned ice cream" LOL! That's hilarious! Actually. . . we'd better not mention it again. We don't want to give the commission any ideas.

BunE: Either the LJW staff was watching us yesterday, or you and I are ahead of the game here. I couldn't stop laughing when I saw today's question!

amazingmo: As a language enthusiast, your post all by itself made logging in worth it today. I've studied a lot of languages, but my exposure to the Scandinavian family is pretty limited. Australia? Are you kidding me? ms_canada, I think your position as "most distant participant" has been usurped!

tell_it: Phone cards are a good idea. The troops in country could sure use them. It is very thoughtful of you to suggest this. You may be able to call the Red Cross to find out how to get them delivered. There are other agencies also. I don't recall how my unit sent the packages we put together.

neopolss: I agree wholeheartedly. All of us "little people" have to live within our means. Our government should make the same effort. We can debate and discuss what programs should be funded, but you can be sure with fewer of our tax dollars to spend the programs that are funded will be real priorities.

Ubermime: Ba Ba Barbarian Dave the Barbarian Huge but a wimp! :)) My. . .uh. . . daughter watches it, too. Yeah, that's it.

amazingmo: mjg góður! tho, my guess is there are accent marks missing, which, of course would change pronunciation.

those with little knowledge of iceland: in iceland your surname is (typically) your father's first name added with either -son or -dóttir (depending on your specific gender). but, surnames are rarely used, since the population is so small. and, the telephone book in iceland, is arranged by first name.

don't you feel more informed now?!

my favourite iced-cream is a toss up. mint chocolate chip, or homemade vanilla. mmmm...

0

Fangorn 9 years, 1 month ago

Speaking of bans. . . http://www2.ljworld.com/news/2005/jun/30/city_bans_exotic_animals_circuses/?city_local

merrywidow: "The" telephone book in Iceland? Are you saying there's only one? I guess I didn't realize how small their population is. Or perhaps there's just not that many homes with telephones. [I hope this didn't sound sarcastic. I really don't now that much about Iceland.]

0

acg 9 years, 1 month ago

It's so funny you guys should mention Dave the Barbarian. Me and my fiance had "words" last night about whether or not we should let his 5 year old son watch Dave. His whole argument is "that guy gives good barbarians a bad name. He's a complete wussy and not at all barbarian material". I mean how dumb is that for a reason to not let a child watch a cartoon? It's not like we have a lot of quality cartoons to choose from these days, anyway. Cartoons have become weird now. Give me the smurfs, anyday.

0

merrywidow033 9 years, 1 month ago

yeah. the population of iceland is smaller than KC (i think around 289K) so it is a mixture of homes that don't use telephones, and small population. it's my destination as soon as i graduate.. (IF that ever happens) >_<

0

enochville 9 years, 1 month ago

Yes. There is only one phone book in Iceland. Oprah had a guest from Iceland on her show once where that was discussed. Another interesting fact is that Icelandic women often leave their children in their strollers outside while the mothers goes inside stores to shop.

0

Liberty 9 years, 1 month ago

Perhaps we should create a ban on the City Commission before they ban Ice Cream? They should be able to continue to operate outside of the country only.

I think we have the Constitutional power to do that because we all like Ice Cream.

fangorn (or anybody) - Do a search for My Soldier. I don't know how to provide a link. One can adopt a soldier to write to, as well as how to send packages and what is needed (can you believe we don't supply our service persons with enough chapstick?). Also, your local Jeep dealer has a drop point to put stuff in boxes to send overseas.

I think the LJW starting to get into to fun of this board, at least I hope so. For me - pralines and cream...hmmm...

0

ms_canada 9 years, 1 month ago

I guess I can't claim the title, foreign correspondant anymore. I feel positively Lawrencian by now. And I say welcome on board to amazingmo. Good to have some new input. My fav in the ice cream department would have to be my Aunt Clara's home made vanilla. She would sit in the shade of the hedge in front of the farm house on a hot summer day and crank the freezer by hand using ice from the ice house across the farm yard. The cream came from the cows in the pasture and the eggs from the hen house. Anyone of you know what an ice house is? No? Well, I'll tell you. Start with a large hole in the ground, deep enough for a tall man to stand up in. Pour in a bunch of sawdust, build a nice little house over top with a trap door in the floor. In the dead of winter go to the slough behind the barn, cut a lot of large blocks of ice, load them on the sledge, pull it up the hill and deposit the ice into the hole. Surround them with sawdust. You could hang your home cured hams and bacon on hooks above the ice. You kept your milk, eggs and cream in the little house and in summer you chipped ice off the blocks for your ice cream machine. In November there would still be some ice left from the previous winter. Great system. Necessity is the mother of invention, I believe. My Auntie Clara made the best ice cream. When I get to heaven and see her again, I will fill up on her treat.

hmm.. so, i'm pretty sure that lj world doesn't sit and read these and delete people's posts.. it's done by YOU the user. see that little "suggest removal"? my guess (and i admit i know little about websites) would be it gets fed to another page that sends a message to another computer to delete the comment. how can you presume that someone on lj staff sits and reads your posts to consider the removal? oy. conceited much? hahaha

Homemade vanilla is my real favorite. But I also like Blue Bunny Key Lime. I always like to add some more graham cracker crumbs to it.

It makes me sick that if I lived outside of Lawrence I could get Cox cable for $9.95 a month, but I use rabbit ears because I can't afford anything else. How is it that monopolies are legal here? Actually we probably can't discuss that here being that the LJWorld is part of a mega company that owns a lot of media outlets in Lawrence. Hopefully, this message isn't deleted.

0

happy_me 9 years, 1 month ago

I sympathise enoch I have bunny ears too. cable is just too expensive in this town.

preparing for deletion

0

Fangorn 9 years, 1 month ago

Be careful about this "bunny ears" talk. It sounds too close to Carmenilla's "rabbit".

extreme: All I can say is: grooaannn!! LOL!

FlakeyT: I've got a fantastic recipe for chocolate chip cookies. It was already amazing and I tweaked it a bit. If that's your favorite kind, it could send you the recipe.

r_u: I didn't know about My Soldier. enochville: Thanks for posting the link.

Ubermime: My favorite barbarian will always be Thundar.

0

Anne Bracker 9 years, 1 month ago

The My Soldier site is: http://www.mville.edu/mysoldier/index.html

It's a great program. I've been participating in it for several months now.

0

enochville 9 years, 1 month ago

The Cox Cable deal is for basic cable. Their website isn't very clear with what channels exactly, but it is more than I can pull out of the air with antennas.

offtotheright: $100 may not be expensive to you, but I am a student. I pay nothing for tv, $11.00 for dial up internet, average about $2.00 for long distance, and get my local phone through SBC with no bells or whistles.

0

happy_me 9 years, 1 month ago

OTTR: maybe $100 isn't much for you but I'm a stay home mom ( my hubby works ) and the additional $40 (we pay $60 for phone and DSL no long distance) just won't fit the budget. Oh and I refuse to have some one else raise my kids so no job for me thanks.

0

Ceallach 9 years, 1 month ago

Still prefer Jamoca Almond Fudge from Baskin-Robbins.

We are finding common ground today -- I too participate in the MySoldier program. Hurrah for Manhattanville!

TV is mostly crap. Save your money, the library is free!

I make a mean coconut milk sorbet. Goes great with chocolate anything.

kansaskate 9 years, 1 month ago

Why NOT talk about ice cream? Does anyone realize how wonderful it is? Who can possibly think about Bush or anything remotely political while eating ice cream? Why don't you all get off your computers and eat some and maybe go do something worthwhile instead of sitting around complaining - in case you haven't noticed, you're PREACHING TO THE CHOIR, impeachment is not an option, he'll be gone in a few years anyway, and you're not impressing anyone by mouthing off in the LJWorld website, of all places! Get a life! And it's bubblegum. Everyone forgets about bubblegum after they turn 14, but it's still as good as it always was.

I have this cake recipe that's called Sunday Pudding Cake. When you make it, after you have the batter spread in the pan you poor in a few cups of boiling water and then as it cooks, the water sinks down to the bottom of the pan and forms a 2 inch layer of hot fudge that the cake rests on top of. You have to serve it over ice cream to cut the sweetness but it's the best cake I've ever had.

Not sure if it's exact or not Tom F, but it sounds like the same concept. My recipe I got from my mom who got it from her mom who made it every Sunday after church, hence the name. I think I'll make one of those when I get home. :)

0

happy_me 9 years, 1 month ago

definately cake for me....although it could me death in the long run :)

0

ms_canada 9 years, 1 month ago

My favourite cake is Poppy Seed Chiffon. My kids always insist on it for their birthdays. Last Oct. I flew to see my daughter for her birthday and took one along in my carry on and the customs people had a belly laugh at that. Also took some Rice Tarts along. the cake goes well with Auntie Clara's Vanilla Ice Cream but my favourite dessert for guests is Pineapple Dessert. Not too sweet for after a big meal. It is the best and gets rave revues. Anyone wants the recipe, I will send it to you via LJW convenience.

0

Carmenilla 9 years, 1 month ago

Good thing you clarified that, Kline. I thought maybe you were a "potty prowler"!!!

Also, did you know that either Ben or Jerry has had heart surgery due to clogged arteries? He was still in his late 30's when he had the surgery. And the man who started Baskins/Robbins died of heart failure due to clogged arteries. Everything in moderation folks!

0

sunflower_sue 9 years, 1 month ago

Well, since I brought it up (and I'm done tiling my bathroom for the night) Cake:

  1. Carrot Cake
  2. Excessively Expressive Espresso Ecstasy (Cake)
  3. New York Cheesecake
  4. Aunt Betty's Chocolate Pound cake
  5. Pineapple Upside down cake (baked in a cast iron skillet)

(these ALL have to be homemade, of course!)

Now let's talk foreign desserts: Baklava!

Tomorrow's possible ?: What food will you be eating on the 4th?
