Is cutting sixth-grade band and orchestra worth the $226,000 that the Lawrence school district would save?
Asked at Vermont Street on March 28, 2004
“No. It’s the science vs. art question. To say that one aspect of a child’s learning is more important is to deny that the other part is significant at all. A well-rounded education is needed.”
“I’m not a politician. What are they going to gain, and what are they going to lose? What else are the kids going to do? The board needs to ask these questions and decide what’s best for the community.”
“No, because I feel that music and the arts are an integral part of a good education.”
“No. They should look at other programs to cut, like athletics.”
