Is it appropriate for penalties for producing illegal drugs to be higher than for violent crimes such as manslaughter?

“It depends on what the crime is, of course, but I’m all in favor of crushing drugs. So I’m for stiff penalties for producers of illegal drugs.”
“No. … I don’t use drugs myself, but the courts shouldn’t be able to dictate what happens in the privacy of your home, as long as you aren’t killing anybody.”
“I think penalties should be appropriate for the severity of the crime. It always seems like the bad guys are protected and get off.”
“No, I don’t think that’s appropriate. They don’t make enough of a justification, depending on the crime.”
