Kenneth C. Pine

Memorial services for Kenneth C. Pine, 93, Lawrence, KS, will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 14, 2018 at First United Methodist Church, 10th & Vermont in Lawrence. Private family inurnment will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery in Lawrence, KS. He passed away on Wednesday, March 7, 2018 at Pioneer Ridge Retirement Community. Kenneth was born on September 1, 1924 in Douglas County, KS the son of Clifford A. and Stella (Schafstall) Pine. He graduated from Lawrence Memorial High School in 1942 and went on the attend the University of Kansas and the University of Nebraska, Lincoln working on an Army Specialized Training Program and engineering; and then returning to KU to complete his Bachelor of Science in Business with a major in Marketing. He then attended The American College of Life Underwriters where he received his Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) credentials. He served his country in the United States Army during WWII as a Squad Sergeant in France and Germany. He also served as a Military Police Sergeant. Ken worked various sales positions in Lawrence and Mission, KS before becoming a licensed insurance agent for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company in Lawrence until he retired in 1981. Later he worked in hardware sales and at the YMCA in Estes Park, CO. He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church serving on several commissions and singing in the Chancel Choir for over 50 years and several quartets. He also served as a charter member of the Lawrence Chapter of SPEBSQSA (Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America). He was a member of Northeast Kansas Chapter American Society of Chartered Life Underwriters, the National Association of Life Underwriters, and the Kansas Association of Life Underwriters. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and fellowship. He married Rowena Jean Nehrbass on January 28, 1949 in Lawrence. She preceded him in death June 15, 2012. Survivors include one daughter, Penny Pine Hemphill, and husband, Charlie, Lawrence; and two grandchildren, Sarah Hemphill, Denver, CO and Sam Hemphill, Lawrence. The family will greet friends at 10 a.m. one hour prior to the service on Wednesday, March 14th at the church. The family suggests memorials in his name to the Lawrence Humane Society or Great Lakes Hospice and may be sent in care of the WarrenMcElwain Mortuary.
