Mary Lou Vaughan

Memorial services for Mary Lou Vaughan, 71, Lawrence, will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church in Lawrence. Mrs. Vaughan died June 19, 2017, at her home. Mary was the fourth child born to Mark and Kathleen Maas May 22, 1946 in Dubuque, IA. She attended The Academy of The Visitation High School of Dubuque and her sophomore year at the high school in Key West, FL. After graduation, she attended St. Luke’s School of Nursing in Cedar Rapids, IA. earning the degree of LPN. After nurses training, she and Larry Spoon married and had a daughter, Jennifer Spoon in 1967. Mary worked in nursing in the OR at Cedar Rapids and Dubuque and they moved to Lawrence, KS in 1978. She continued in the nursing field in a Lawrence day care center and two Topeka elementary schools through 1995. Mary and Robert Vaughan were married at the First United Methodist Church in Lawrence in 1984. She enjoyed flower gardening, bird watching, camping at Clinton Lake, fishing, tandem bicycling, day trips, reading, and vacationing at rivers, lakes, and the ocean at North Padre Island, TX. Robert and Jennifer survive at home. Other family includes Matt and Amy Vaughan with two sons in Prairie Village, KS, and Alex and Janel Vaughan with a daughter and son in Phoenix, AZ. She is also survived by her brother, Dale Maas and his wife Karen of Topeka along with cousins, nieces and nephews. Sisters Nadine Kieffer and Joan Hoffman preceded her in death.
