Marvin R. McCurdy

Marvin R. McCurdy, 89, of Ottawa, KS passed away Monday, June 19, 2017 at his home.
He was born January 18, 1928 in Ottawa, KS the son of Elmer McCurdy and Ethel Blakesley McCurdy. He grew up in the Williamsburg, KS area, graduating from Williamsburg High School with the class of 1946. He then served his country in the United States Navy at the Olathe Naval Air Station for several years. During his service he lived in Olathe, KS and in 1961 he moved to Lawrence Kansas. He moved back to the Williamsburg area in 2006 before moving to Ottawa this past year.
On May 16, 1950, Marvin was united in marriage to Beverly Slankard. She preceded him in death on December 30, 1999. On September 9, 2004, Marvin was united in marriage to Sheila Thornton. They have shared the last twelve years lovingly together.
Marvin worked for Hallmark Cards for 28 years. He ran a large Sheraton die­cut machine before moving into building maintenance and retiring in 1989.
Marvin was a very handy man. He made furniture and many items with his carpentry and mechanical skills. He was an avid Jayhawks, Royals and Chiefs fan, but most enjoyed Lawrence High Lions football. He rarely missed a home game and, as always, was very boisterous in the stands! He was proud to be an usher for Kansas University football and basketball games for many years. Marvin was a people person who was always making friends and never afraid to talk to someone new.
Marvin is survived by his wife, Sheila Thornton McCurdy, Ottawa KS; two sons, Michael McCurdy (Ralena), Eudora and Kevin McCurdy (Amy), Lawrence; two daughters, Lynda Scrivner (David), Scandia, KS and Penny McCurdy (Danny Coyne­ deceased), Lecompton; two step­children, Eric Pearson, Lawrence and Erica Swanson, Eudora; and eleven grandchildren, Kelly, Mason, Kelsey, Kegan, Kate, Anna, Clark, Logan, Austin, Ty and Jett.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Beverly McCurdy; his parents; and his sister, Gladys Norton.
Memorial funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, June 28, 2017 at Lamb­ Roberts Funeral Home in Ottawa. The family will receive friends from 6:00­ 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 27 at the funeral home.
