Catheryn Irene “Kate” Weigand

Catheryn I. “Kate” Weigand, 98, Emporia, Kansas, passed away Monday, July 27, 2015 at the Emporia Presbyterian Manor.
Cremation is planned. A memorial service will be held at the Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home on Monday, August 3, 2015 at 2:00 P.M. conducted by Charles Bradbury, First United Methodist Church. Inurnment will be in the Maplewood Cemetery, Emporia. The family will receive friends at the funeral home the hour before the service.
Catheryn Irene Welch was born on November 5, 1916, in Sterling, Kansas, the daughter of Charles Ira and Zulu May (Magers) Welch. She graduated from Sterling High School and The Kansas State Teachers College, Emporia, Kansas.
Kate married James Joseph “Joe” Weigand on October 2, 1936, in Ellsworth, Kansas. They became parents of three children: Judith Day-Trenary (James), Arkansas City, Kansas, Francis Joseph Weigand (Nancy), Florissant, Missouri, and Kathie Clements-Abel (David), Wichita, Kansas.
Mrs. Weigand was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Emporia, where she was a soloist in the church choir for many years. She was a second grade teacher at the William Allen White School and later became the Elementary Music Supervisor for the Emporia Public Schools. Mrs. Weigand gave private music lessons in Chanute, Lawrence, and Emporia. Kate and her husband often presented music workshops for inservice sessions in nearby school districts. Kate was a music adjudicator and oratorio soloist across the state of Kansas. In addition to her musical accomplishments, Kate was an avid bridge player and belonged to several clubs in Emporia. She read widely and was a loyal fan of the Kansas Jayhawk basketball team.
Catheryn Weigand was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; her brothers, Claude and Clark; and an infant grandson Joseph Vance Day. She is survived by a niece, Carolyn Dumm, Altamont, Kansas, her children; eight grandchildren- Andrew Day (Kim), Bartlesville, OK; Joel Day, Arkansas City, KS; Kelly Day Stewart (Terry), Wichita, KS, Kimberly Weigand Klotz (Damon), Florissant, MO, Robert Weigand (Tanya), Columbia, MO; Joseph Clements, James Clements (Mindy), and Nicholas Clements (Amanda), all of Wichita, KS and by fifteen great-grandchildren.
Memorials are suggested for large print books at the Emporia Public Library, library of the First United Methodist Church, Emporia, and to the Weigand Scholarship at Emporia State University. Gifts may be sent through the funeral home, PO Box #175, Emporia, Kansas 66801.
