Sherman Brooks Halsey

Sherman Brooks Halsey, 56, passed away October 29, at home in Nashville. Services will be held Noon Tuesday, November 5, 2013, at the Methodist Church in Independence, KS. To honor Sherman’s prestigious television and film career, his creativity and dedication to the University of Kansas, a scholarship is being created in his name. Sherman was born February 22, 1957, in Independence, KS, to Jim and Jo Ann (Sherman) Halsey, and graduated from IHS in 1975. He began at age 13 putting up posters and show bills for his father’s concert promotion company. While studying film at KU, he promoted concerts with artists from the Jim Halsey Co. roster. He interned at Dick Clark Productions and was later hired there. Later, he split time between the Halsey Agency’s offices in Tulsa and Beverly Hills, developing the television production arm of the company. He was Vice Chairman of the Jim Halsey Co. from 1980-1990, representing 47 of Country Music’s top stars and with his father also headed the MCA/ Churchill Record Co. and produced and directed hundreds of television shows and videos.
He was the recipient an MTV Award, multiple Academy of Country Music (ACM) Awards for best Video, New York Film and Television Festivals Gold Medal Award, Gold Telly Awards, Country Music Television (CMT) Flame worthy among others. Some positions held were: board of directors at the Academy of Country Music, judge on the ACM’s Blue Ribbon video committee, board of Belmont University Music Business Program and member of the professional advisory board of the University of Kansas Department of Theatre.
He most recently was partners with his father in the Halsey family of entertainment and education businesses. In addition to his creative genius, Sherman’s attributes were his warm heart, generous spirit, and devotion to family and friends.
Survivors of Sherman Halsey include: His mother, Jo Ann Halsey, Lawrence, KS. Father and stepmother, Jim and Minisa Halsey, Mounds, OK. Sister, Gina Halsey, Lawrence, KS. Stepsister, Crissy Rumford, and stepbrother, Woody Carter.
