Larry John Kane

Larry John Kane, 64, Oro Valley, AZ, formerly of Lawrence, KS, died peacefully at home on July 4, 2013, while undergoing treatment for metastatic colon cancer. Larry was born on December 30, 1948 in Topeka, KS. He relocated to the Tucson area from Lawrence, KS, in 2011 to retire with his wife, Nancy, whom he married in October, 1974, in Overland Park, KS. He is survived by his wife, Nancy; their two daughters, Meredith and Jenny, currently of Oro Valley; his mother, Helen Joyce Kane, Topeka, KS; two sisters, Linda (Jay) Siwek, Silver Spring, MD, and Pattie Kovalchuk, Topeka, KS, and their children. Larry worked in the banking industry his entire career, most recently as Executive Vice President at U.S. Bank in Lawrence, KS. He formerly worked at First Interstate Bank in Portland, OR, and The Northern Trust Company in Chicago, IL. He attended Washburn University and Kansas University, where he obtained an MBA in 1974. He also completed studies for a Masters of Banking degree at the Stonier Graduate School of Banking, Rutgers University. He enjoyed charitable work, such as with the Kansas Action for Children organization, Rotary Club and Sigma Phi Epsilon of Washburn alumni association. He spent many happy hours playing mandolin and guitar, especially “old time” music with his Lawrence and Tucson friends, and attending the Walnut Grove Festival in Winfield, KS. Fishing and golf trips with college buddies were the highlight of his year and he cherished these lifelong friendships. He also loved KU basketball and was a proud Jayhawk wherever he went.

Among his many excellent caregivers, his family would like to especially thank Dr. Teresa King of Lawrence, KS, for her kindness and support throughout his illness, as well as Dr. Emad Elquza of the University of Arizona Cancer Center, Tucson. At his request, no formal services will be held, with cremation and private interment at a later date.
