Oswin “Karmie” Galle, Jr

Memorial service for Oswin “Karmie” Galle, Jr, 81, Lawrence will be held 2:00 pm Thursday, April 18, 2013 at First Presbyterian Church. Private inurnment will take place at Pioneer Cemetery. He died April 8, 2013 at Presbyterian Manor.
Karmie was born on February 11, 1932 in Valley Center, KS the son of Oswin Karmie and Sara Schmidt Galle.
Karmie was employed as a senior scientist for 40 years at the Kansas Geological Survey for the University of Kansas.
He was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder and several terms as Clerk of Session. He also served on several committees of the Presbytery of Northern Kansas. He was involved in other activities such as bell and chancel choir.
He was a member of the Federation of Analytical Chemistry and Spectroscopy Societies (FACSS) and served as Governing Board Chair, General Chair, treasurer, and member of the governing board. He wrote the FACSS Operational Manual and in 2012 he received the Distinguished Service Award for exceptional long-tem service to FACSS. He was also a member of the Society for Applied Spectroscopy (SAS), Charter member of the Kansas City section of SAS, served as President and Parliamentarian, authored the original SAS Officers and Committee Members Handbook, was the co-managing editor of Applied Spectroscopy publications, as well as receiving the Distinguished Service Award in 1996 for his dedication and outstanding service to SAS.
His hobbies were model-railroading, gardening, and traveling. The most memorable trips were the visit to Weierhof, Germany, home of his paternal great-grandparents, and Ukraine, home of his maternal great- grandparents, before they all emigrated to America. He married Edna M. Thieszen on June 1, 1957 in Henderson, Nebraska. She survives of the home.
Other survivors include daughter, Suzanne Marie Galle, Lawrence; two sisters, Lillian Galle and Darlene Wynn and husband, Ted, all of Newton, KS; brother, Omer Galle and wife, Zona, Newton, KS; brother’s-in-law; sister’s-in-law; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Michael Lee Galle in 2001; and three sisters, Marianna Hall, Kathryn
Vogt, and Lorraine Galle. Memorial contributions may be made in his name to the First Presbyterian Church, Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) or Visiting Nurses Association and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
