George V. Allen 1913 - 2007 Lawrence
Services for George V. Allen, 93, Lawrence, will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary. Mr. Allen died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2007, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.He was born Dec. 14, 1913, in Wichita, the son of Charles Nelson and Florence May McMulin Allen. He spent his early years in Conway Springs, and his family moved to Lawrence in 1927.He graduated from Liberty Memorial High School and earned a law degree from Kansas University.Mr. Allen practiced law in Lawrence for 40 years. When he retired, he became a farmer.Mr. Allen was a member of the Douglas County Bar Association. He enjoyed Western U.S. history, collecting early American photographs, stereoptican views, books and antiques.He married Betty Jane Sackmann on June 5, 1943, in Kansas City, Mo. She survives, of the home.Other survivors include two daughters, Jane Vesper, Oklahoma City, and Deborah Nelson and husband Tom; two sons, Stephen C. and wife Jane Getto, and Jeffrey N. and wife Kirsten "Missy," all of Lawrence; seven grandchildren, Jenny and Chad Vesper, Jesse and Jared Nelson, and Weston, Nicholas and Christopher Allen; and four great-grandchildren.The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary.The family suggests memorials to the Lawrence Humane Society, sent in care of the mortuary.
