Nelle Brown Lewis

Memorial services for Nelle Brown Lewis, 91, Lawrence, will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Trinity Episcopal Church. Private inurnment will be in Spring Hill Cemetery in Charleston, W.Va.Mrs. Lewis died Wednesday, July 18, 2007, at Brandon Woods Retirement Community.She was born Nov. 7, 1915, in Charleston, W.Va., the daughter of William B. and Virginia A. Laidley Givin. She attended the University of Alabama and graduated from Duke University. She also received a master’s degree in social work from Washburn University in Topeka. She was a resident of Topeka before she moved to Lawrence.Mrs. Lewis was a social worker in the pediatrics department at Stormont-Vail Regional Health Center in Topeka. She led cancer support groups and therapy groups for parents of terminally ill children. She retired in the late 1990s.She was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma social sorority. She traveled extensively and had a long career of civic involvement, including service on the boards of the Crittenden Home, The Salvation Army and Topeka Family Service and Guidance Center. She was also a longtime volunteer at the Topeka Public Library.She married Hunter Fielding Lewis in July 1946 in Charleston, W.Va. He died July 24, 1960.She was also preceded in death by a son, Thomas Walker Lewis.Survivors include a son, Warner F. Lewis and wife Pam; three grandchildren, Allison, Nicholas and Tom Lewis Jr.; and nine nieces and nephews.The family suggests memorials to Stormont-Vail Hospital Foundation for the pediatrics department or Heart of America Hospice, sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.Online condolences may be sent at www.warrenmcelwain.com, subject: Lewis.
