James Clemont Canole

Services for James Clemont Canole, 80, of Topeka, will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at West Side Christian Church in Topeka. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery in Topeka. Mr. Canole died Saturday, Jan. 7, 2006, at his home.He was born Sept. 25, 1925, in Marshall, Mo., the son of John Thomas and Lottie Mae Holiday Canole. He graduated from Northeast High School in Kansas City, Mo., in 1942. He attended Central Missouri Teacher’s College for one year before entering the U.S. Navy, where he served from 1943 to 1946.He received a Bachelor of Science degree in architecture from Kansas University in 1949. He joined the state of Kansas Architect’s Office in September 1949 and was appointed state architect in 1961. In that position, he completed work on the Eisenhower Presidential Library in Abilene and helped develop plans for the Place of Meditation. He later served l8 years as director of facilities planning at KU. He retired in 1987.He was a member of West Side Christian Church, where he served on many committees and the diaconate.He married Alpha LaVonne Julian on May 25, 1946. She survives. Other survivors include a daughter, Susan Kim Canole Crooks, Silver Lake; a brother; John, Liberty, Mo., and two grandchildren.Friends may call after 2 p.m. Tuesday at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel, where the family will receive them from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday.The family suggests memorials to American Legion Dorsey-Liberty Post 14, 3408 W.
