Memorial services for Byron D. Moats, 62, and Nancy K. Oyler Moats, 64, both of Westwood, Kan., will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Country Club Congregational Church in Kansas City, Mo. Private inurnment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery in Lawrence.Mr. and Mrs. Moats died Thursday, June 14, 2007, in a one-car accident east of Junction City on Interstate 70.He was born Feb. 23, 1945, in Monterey, Calif., the son of George B. and Billie Davis Moats.Mr. Moats graduated from Baker University in 1966 with a bachelor of science degree and from Pittsburg State University in May 1973 with a master of science degree. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, and had served during the Vietnam War. He was a retired English teacher at Oak Park High School in North Kansas City, Mo.Mrs. Moats was born Nov. 1, 1942, in Lawrence, the daughter of Robert B. and Corinne High Oyler.She attended Stephens College for two years and graduated from Kansas University in 1964 and earned a master of science degree from KU in 1966. She was a retired guidance counselor at Turner High School in Kansas City, Kan. She was a member of the Alpha Delta Pi social sorority and was the fifth of seven Alpha Delta Pi members in her family.They were both members of Country Club Congregational Church in Kansas City, Mo.Mr. Moats’ survivors include a sister, Billie Moats-Staats, Chapel Hill, N.C.A brother, Eric Lee Moats, preceded him in death.Mrs. Moats’ survivors include a brother, Robert F. Oyler, Lawrence.The family will greet friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence and from 6 p.m. 8 p.m. Wednesday at Country Club Congregational Church in Kansas City, Mo.The family suggests memorials to the Byron and Nancy Moats Educational Scholarships at Turner High School or at Oak Park High School, sent in care of the mortuary.Online condolences may be sent at www.warrenmcelwain.com, subject: Moats.
