On countless mornings, afternoons and evenings this summer, drive by Kansas University’s Memorial Stadium and you’ll see hundreds of Lawrence residents punishing themselves as they try to get in shape. It’s all part of Red Dog’s Dog Days, a 25-year-old community exercise program. Want to join them - or at least get an idea of what they’re doing? Don “Red Dog” Gardner will be in the News Center at 1:30 p.m. today to take your questions.

Red Dog’s Dog Days - a 25-year tradition - returns today to Kansas University’s Memorial Stadium. The conditioning program will be led by Don “Red Dog” Gardner. The workout varies each session but consists of calisthenics and a one- to three-mile run.

The rules are simple. “If you’ve made your 26 times fair and square, then you get a T-shirt,” Don “Red Dog” Gardner said. But the road is rough. “We sprinted a lot, ran, did stairs, jumping jacks, volleyball jumps,” said Jenica Wessels, who participated in Dog Days, daily workouts led by Gardner at Kansas University’s Memorial Stadium.

They all can be found at Memorial Stadium on the Kansas University campus Mondays through Thursdays, three times a day, doing jumping jacks, crunches, push-ups, running stairs or jogging laps around the track in the heat of the summer.Hundreds of people of all ages join in on Dog Days. Many wonder how this all began.
