The athletic departments at both Lawrence and Free State high schools will showcase their fall sports teams at jamborees during the last week of August. The campus-wide festivities kick off Aug. 28 at LHS, and Aug. 29 at FSHS.

A native of Hays, DeWitt grew up loving football, wrestling, track and academics as a high schooler at Thomas More Prep-Marian. But spend a few minutes with Lawrence High’s new athletic director and assistant principal and his pride for the city and school he now calls home comes across as strong and sincere as his handshake. It didn’t surprise Jo Huntsinger last year when longtime Lawrence High volleyball coach Joan Wells was inducted into the Kansas Volleyball Association’s inaugural hall of fame class. However, Huntsinger never expected she would receive the same honor as her predecessor this summer. By Benton Smith
World Company Cup returns to Free State

For the seventh time in eight years, the World Company Cup belongs to Free State High. The trophy, awarded since 2006 to the school that prevails most often in City Showdowns and other competitions between rivals Lawrence High and Free State, spent the last year on display at LHS. However, the Lions’ claim to the cup proved short-lived, as Free State conquered the Lions, 17-9, in the standings. By Benton Smith

Lawrence High volleyball tops emotional Free State, 3-1 in city showdown

In the minutes leading up to the Free State High volleyball team’s Senior Night home finale against rival Lawrence, coach Nancy Hopkins introduced the Firebirds’ nine seniors, one by one, to the crowd. After shedding some tears and sharing the moment with their family members, the seniors closed the procession with a group hug.
Lions’ AD Ron Commons to retire
