Though Lawrence’s girls were thrilled with the victory over the defending Class 6A state champions, they were also quick to downplay it. By Bobby Nightengale

Growth opportunity: LHS grad gets ‘fit,’ earns UMKC track scholarship
July 20, 2013
When Martin Williams graduated from Lawrence High two years ago, he didn’t consider himself a great track and field athlete. He threw for the Lions throughout high school and had success — enough to earn a junior-college scholarship. When he arrived at Coffeyville Community College, though, Williams began to change the way he approached everything. By Benton Smith
Right at home: New LHS athletic director Bill DeWitt comes full circle
July 17, 2013
In Bill DeWitt’s mind, the word hometown doesn’t have to be defined by origins. A native of Hays, DeWitt grew up loving football, wrestling, track and academics as a high schooler at Thomas More Prep-Marian. But spend a few minutes with Lawrence High’s new athletic director and assistant principal and his pride for the city and school he now calls home comes across as strong and sincere as his handshake. May 18, 2013
For some high school track and field athletes, earning a trip to state with a top-four regional finish is nothing new. The state veterans from Free State and Lawrence knew nothing would be guaranteed Friday at a Class 6A regional at LHS, and showed no lack of satisfaction upon getting back to the ultimate meet next weekend in Wichita. Still, the Firebirds and Lions who became first-time state qualifiers made it clear the bliss of that moment is unique. By Benton Smith
