Lions girls capture regional track championship

With trips to next weekend’s state championship on the line, Lawrence High’s track and field teams switched things into another gear at a Class 6A regional meet Friday at Shawnee Mission South. The Lions girls totaled 130.5 points for first place — easily distancing themselves from second-place Shawnee Mission West (111.5).

High schools notebook: Infield leading Lions softball

Lawrence High softball coach Joe Dee Tarbutton raved about his infielders before the season. They’ve lived up to the billing. With junior Morgan Byrn at third, sophomore Sophie Taylor at short, senior Marly Carmona at second and senior Kristen Gile at first, the infield has been one of the best in the Sunflower League at the plate and in the field. Lions’ Broadwell receives award

Lawrence High senior Caitlin Broadwell was honored by USA Today High School Sports and the Army National Guard with the Inspiration Award, which was presented to her during the LHS spring awards ceremony Thursday. The award is given to just 15 athletes across the country.
LHS girls track team edges FSHS in early season rivalry meet

It was the second time in five days that Lawrence and Free State high schools competed at the same meet. This time, it was just against each other. Pitted in a dual on Tuesday afternoon at Lawrence High, the Lions girls topped the Firebirds, 76-75, while the FSHS boys beat LHS, 82-67. Though Lawrence’s girls were thrilled with the victory over the defending Class 6A state champions, they were also quick to downplay it. By Bobby Nightengale
