Free State’s Cierra Campbell placed second in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle races to lead the Firebirds’ swimming and diving team to a third place finish at the Olathe Invitational on Friday.
High schools notebook: LHS softball shelves C Team

Alex Ginsberg won two individual titles, five of her Lawrence High teammates won individual crowns, and the Lions won all three relays en route to a 127-49 dual-meet rout Thursday at Shawnee Mission South.

Lawrence native Reaney swims to big records under ex-Aquahawks coach

Lawrence native Emma Reaney, a junior at Notre Dame, has made a huge splash not only in the school’s record books, but the NCAA and American ones, too. Saturday at the ACC Championships, Reaney broke NCAA Division I and American records in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:04.34. By Chris Duderstadt

The four swimmers on Free State High’s 200-yard medley relay team entered Saturday afternoon’s Sunflower League Championship with a plan. Canaan Campbell, Jordan Portela, Josh Terrell and Jack Ziegler knew what time splits they wanted and executed them to perfection. They raced past their opponents and the clock when they set a Sunflower League record with a time of 1:37.65. By Bobby Nightengale

Free State’s Jordan Portela had the fastest times in the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly during the preliminaries of the Sunflower League boys swim meet Friday at California Trail Middle School. Portela swam 1:45.15 in the 200 freestyle and 52.29 in the 100 butterfly.
