Tim Schraad placed second in the 100 fly, and Caleb Axlund was second in the 100 back, and they swam on the winning 200 freestyle relay team to help Lawrence High to a runner-up finish at the Lawrence Invitational on Thursday at Knox Natatorium.

Free State High swimmers Canaan Campbell and Josh Terrell each won two events to push the Firebirds boys to a second-place finish on Saturday at the Shawnee Mission Northwest Invitational.

Despite nearly a month between meets due to winter break, Free State High’s boys swimming team showed no signs of a layoff. The Firebirds won all 11 swimming events and cruised to a team title at the five-team Lawrence Invitational on Wednesday at Lawrence High.

In Bill DeWitt’s mind, the word hometown doesn’t have to be defined by origins. A native of Hays, DeWitt grew up loving football, wrestling, track and academics as a high schooler at Thomas More Prep-Marian. But spend a few minutes with Lawrence High’s new athletic director and assistant principal and his pride for the city and school he now calls home comes across as strong and sincere as his handshake. World Company Cup returns to Free State

For the seventh time in eight years, the World Company Cup belongs to Free State High. The trophy, awarded since 2006 to the school that prevails most often in City Showdowns and other competitions between rivals Lawrence High and Free State, spent the last year on display at LHS. However, the Lions’ claim to the cup proved short-lived, as Free State conquered the Lions, 17-9, in the standings. By Benton Smith
