District hires coach to stabilize gymnastics programs

The gymnastics teams at Lawrence and Free State high schools might finally have a long-term coaching solution. This summer the school district named Brooke Kissinger as head coach of the programs, making her the fourth person to hold the dual position in the past four seasons — despite Free State winning the state championship in 2011 and finishing second in 2012. A native of Hays, DeWitt grew up loving football, wrestling, track and academics as a high schooler at Thomas More Prep-Marian. But spend a few minutes with Lawrence High’s new athletic director and assistant principal and his pride for the city and school he now calls home comes across as strong and sincere as his handshake. World Company Cup returns to Free State

For the seventh time in eight years, the World Company Cup belongs to Free State High. The trophy, awarded since 2006 to the school that prevails most often in City Showdowns and other competitions between rivals Lawrence High and Free State, spent the last year on display at LHS. However, the Lions’ claim to the cup proved short-lived, as Free State conquered the Lions, 17-9, in the standings. By Benton Smith
Short-handed FSHS settles for second at state

Free State High senior Jackie Zaitz spent all Saturday at Lawrence High wearing a walking boot that supported her right ankle. Instead of showing off her all-around skills at the state gymnastics meet, she jotted down scores, walked around gingerly and watched her Firebirds teammates chase a second consecutive state title without her.

Lions’ AD Ron Commons to retire
