In Bill DeWitt’s mind, the word hometown doesn’t have to be defined by origins. A native of Hays, DeWitt grew up loving football, wrestling, track and academics as a high schooler at Thomas More Prep-Marian. But spend a few minutes with Lawrence High’s new athletic director and assistant principal and his pride for the city and school he now calls home comes across as strong and sincere as his handshake. World Company Cup returns to Free State

For the seventh time in eight years, the World Company Cup belongs to Free State High. The trophy, awarded since 2006 to the school that prevails most often in City Showdowns and other competitions between rivals Lawrence High and Free State, spent the last year on display at LHS. However, the Lions’ claim to the cup proved short-lived, as Free State conquered the Lions, 17-9, in the standings. By Benton Smith

Wilson Hack (78), Alex Green (80), Matt Siler (81) and Max Soto (82) all finished as top-10 medalists, and Free State won its Class 6A golf regional title with a team score of 321 — beating out Olathe East (328) and rival Lawrence High (339), which also advanced their teams to state by finishing in the top three.
