LHS boys XC 4th, girls take 7th

Lawrence High’s boys cross country tied finished in a tie for fourth, while the LHS girls took seventh on Saturday at the Emporia High School Cross Country Invitational. Shawnee Mission South won the boys race, while St. Thomas Aquinas won the girls.

Fast finish sparks LHS boys to third at state CC

Zach Andregg finished 18th in the Class 6A boys race (16:34:60), not quite fast enough to catch Free State’s Kain Anderson (10th place, 16:26:40) or FSHS senior Logan Sloan (15th place, 16:29:40). Collectively, though, the Lions showed their strength down the stretch to earn a third-place team finish at the 2010 Cross Country State Championship on Saturday at Rim Rock Farm.
Three of four city cross country squads make state

Lawrence High’s girls placed third with 99 points to earn the final state-qualifying position. Free State, with 100 points, was fourth and did not qualify as a team — the only one of four city squads at the cross country regional not to earn a team state berth.

Before Saturday’s race, Free State junior runner Lynn Robinson made a friendly wager with a friend, who happens to be a professional chef. If Robinson finished in the top three, he’d make whatever meal she wanted. If she failed to place in the top 10, though, she’d be stuck wearing a goofy outfit to school and practice next week. Talk about motivation.

Familiarity of Rim Rock helps LHS, Free State runners

Over 3,000 athletes competed Saturday at the Rim Rock Invitational, making for a quite a festive occasion. Dozens of colorful tents and banners dotted the landscape at Rim Rock Farm, and runners from across the Midwest and their families awaited the various races by chatting, sleeping, eating and stretching.

Gavin Fischer placed second to lead five Lawrence High runners in the top eight as the Lions won the boys division of the Shawnee Heights Cross Country Invitational on Saturday at Lake Shawnee.

Bob Lisher has experienced the benefits of coaching in a four-class high school system, so when Lawrence school board members voted this week to make the transition from a three-year high school system to a four-year system — subsequently allowing all ninth-grade students to participate in high school athletics for the first time — the Free State football coach wasn’t exactly complaining. Quite the opposite, actually.
