In the quarterfinals of the Free State Invitational, Saturday at Royal Crest Lanes, Lawrence High senior Kierstan Warren stepped up to the lane with her team on the verge of elimination and facing a difficult 7-4-10 split. Warren picked up the spare, which lifted LHS to a comeback victory over top-seeded Topeka High, before the Lions eventually lost in the championship to Washburn Rural. By Bobby Nightengale

In Bill DeWitt’s mind, the word hometown doesn’t have to be defined by origins. A native of Hays, DeWitt grew up loving football, wrestling, track and academics as a high schooler at Thomas More Prep-Marian. But spend a few minutes with Lawrence High’s new athletic director and assistant principal and his pride for the city and school he now calls home comes across as strong and sincere as his handshake. World Company Cup returns to Free State

For the seventh time in eight years, the World Company Cup belongs to Free State High. The trophy, awarded since 2006 to the school that prevails most often in City Showdowns and other competitions between rivals Lawrence High and Free State, spent the last year on display at LHS. However, the Lions’ claim to the cup proved short-lived, as Free State conquered the Lions, 17-9, in the standings. By Benton Smith
FSHS boys 6th at state bowling

Free State had one individual medalist and placed sixth in the boys team standings, and Lawrence High had two individual medalists at the Class 6A state bowling meet on Friday at North Rock Lanes. For Free State, Eric Goglau had a 626 series (186-204-236) to place 19th. The top 20 individuals earned medals.
