Lawrence High junior Anthony Bonner walked out of Tuesday night’s basketball game against Shawnee Mission North with a large scratch across his face and a bruised elbow. That was the price to pay in a game that included 47 fouls and 63 free throws.

Shawnee Mission Northwest pulled out a 63-62 home victory over LHS Tuesday night after Cougars guard Jake Horner blocked a driving layup by Lions guard Justin Roberts with a tenth of a second remaining on the game clock.

With two of the top four boys basketball teams in Class 6A squaring off Friday night inside Lawrence High’s Jungle, every person in the gym expected an entertaining, free-flowing clash. Most of the on-court combat came on the defensive side, though, and ultimately the game was decided at the free-throw line, where the No. 2-ranked Lions went 30-for-42 to survive their encounter with No. 4 Shawnee Mission South, 65-61. Last week, the Lions watched their lead evaporate in the final minutes before eventually losing in overtime. Against Kansas City (Kan.) Washington on Friday at Topeka High, Lawrence’s seven-point lead disappeared in the final 2:25 of regulation.
