Mike Lewis, the popular boys basketball coach at Lawrence High School whose firing last week ignited public outcry at a school board meeting, has been reinstated as the head coach, Lawrence school district officials announced Friday. That announcement came after district and LHS administrators — at the urging of the Lawrence school board — agreed to meet with Lewis and reconsider his status as the coach.

Friday night as a college student. In so many ways, life doesn’t get much better than that. But on this past Friday night, University of Arkansas freshman Jake Mosiman just wasn’t in the mood for socializing. “It’s terrible that he’s gone,” said Mosiman, a former Lawrence High basketball star, about the firing of LHS boys coach Mike Lewis. “I hate it. I’ve been in a bad mood since I heard the news.” Column by Tom Keegan
Column: LHS administration should take mulligan, rehire coach Mike Lewis
April 25, 2014
Normally, I’m not a big fan of mulligans. But in the case of this week’s ridiculous firing of Lawrence High boys basketball coach Mike Lewis, I’m all in favor of granting one to the administration. Give the guy his job back before you end up losing yours over it, would be my advice to the decision-makers at 19th and Louisiana. Column by Tom Keegan

Lions, Firebirds hit road with state trips on line
March 8, 2014
Lawrence High’s boys basketball players kept it loose in practice on Friday. They needed a day to rest both physically and mentally after beating Gardner-Edgerton, 62-45, in the first-round of Class 6A sub-state on Thursday and hearing that assistant coach Kermit Aldridge had a turn for the worse in his battle with cancer. Now, a win away from a state tournament appearance, they want to re-energize.
