College baseball players Garrett Cleavinger, Colin Toalson and Shane Willoughby all shared different versions of the same story last week, before the start of the NCAA Tournament. In their respective clubhouses and locker rooms at Oregon, Kansas and Youngstown State, each Lawrence product looked to a nearby television and saw fellow city native Tim Lewis playing for Maryland in the ACC Tournament. Free State High’s girls soccer team will host one more home game this season. The Firebirds (10-6), a No. 7 seed in the Class 6A Central regional, will face 10th-seeded Wichita South (7-8-1) at 5:30 p.m. Monday.

Lawrence High baseball players have been crushing the ball at the plate in their past few games. None of those games compared to the first inning against Shawnee Mission North on Tuesday at LHS. The Lions had every player in the lineup reach base before recording an out, using a barrage of seven hits to score seven runs. They cruised afterward in a 13-0, run-shortened rout over the Indians.
