- If the Lawrence High football team that left the field after its second-round playoff loss this past fall remained intact, the Lions’ first week of summer break would feel a little bit more like vacation. The top offensive weapons from a team that went 8-3 are gone, so of course the team that took the field Tuesday morning at LHS for the first day of camp looked noticeably different. But Lawrence’s newly appointed veterans didn’t seem to be bothered by the development. By Benton Smith
- Finley sisters sweep discus medals at state; LHS girls third

- Lawrence High thrower Rebecca Finley was one throw away from winning the 6A state discus championship when the second-place competitor unleashed a huge final toss. A few seconds later, Rebecca settled for second place, then gave a huge hug to the winner. That’s what sisters do. LHS sophomore Matia Finley won bragging rights for the year in dramatic fashion, uncorking a throw of 139 feet, 11 inches to snatch the victory away from her twin sister. By Jesse Newell

- Free State High’s Alexa Harmon-Thomas breezed to a prelim victory in the 100 hurdles, and that kick-started an impressive day for the junior, who went on to win the long jump and finish second in the high jump.

- When Free State High’s girls track and field athletes make their way to their events at Cessna Stadium beginning this afternoon in Wichita, at the state track championships, many expect to contend for medals. With so many Firebirds competing in 15 different events today and Saturday, coach Steve Heffernan knows in the back of their minds, they’ll be thinking about beating out Olathe East for the Class 6A team title. - For some high school track and field athletes, earning a trip to state with a top-four regional finish is nothing new. The state veterans from Free State and Lawrence knew nothing would be guaranteed Friday at a Class 6A regional at LHS, and showed no lack of satisfaction upon getting back to the ultimate meet next weekend in Wichita. Still, the Firebirds and Lions who became first-time state qualifiers made it clear the bliss of that moment is unique. By Benton Smith

- Free State’s Annie Soderberg (251.05 points) and Jacqueline Zaitz (248.50) were fifth and sixth, respectively, after the preliminary and semifinal rounds of the diving portion of the Class 6A state swimming and diving championships on Thursday at the Capitol Federal Natatorium.
