- Some impromptu number crunching might have made the actual announcement a tad anticlimactic, but Free State High’s gymnastics team finished a dominating season by winning a state championship Saturday at Shawnee Mission Northwest.

- A couple of months back, the athletic departments at Free State and Lawrence high schools didn’t know whether they would have a gymnastics program this year. Today, not only are both programs intact, but they will be competing at the state gymnastics meet at Shawnee Mission Northwest.

- Free State High’s gymnastics team took first place out of 12 teams Saturday at the Shawnee Mission North Invitational. Lawrence High School placed ninth overall.

- The Minnesota Vikings selected Christian Ballard with the ninth pick of the fourth round on the final day of April. The Boston Red Sox used a seventh-round selection on June 7 on left-hander Cody Kukuk, who signed an $800,000 contract 10 weeks later. Earlier this month, Brady Morningstar signed a contract to play professional basketball in Greece. All three graduated from Free State High, which has had plenty to take pride in on the athletic front recently.

- Bob Lisher has experienced the benefits of coaching in a four-class high school system, so when Lawrence school board members voted this week to make the transition from a three-year high school system to a four-year system — subsequently allowing all ninth-grade students to participate in high school athletics for the first time — the Free State football coach wasn’t exactly complaining. Quite the opposite, actually.
