- World Company Cup returns to Free State

- For the seventh time in eight years, the World Company Cup belongs to Free State High. The trophy, awarded since 2006 to the school that prevails most often in City Showdowns and other competitions between rivals Lawrence High and Free State, spent the last year on display at LHS. However, the Lions’ claim to the cup proved short-lived, as Free State conquered the Lions, 17-9, in the standings. By Benton Smith

- Free State High senior Jackie Zaitz spent all Saturday at Lawrence High wearing a walking boot that supported her right ankle. Instead of showing off her all-around skills at the state gymnastics meet, she jotted down scores, walked around gingerly and watched her Firebirds teammates chase a second consecutive state title without her.

- Free State High’s Jacqueline Zaitz took the all-around and the Firebirds won the team title Thursday at the Shawnee Mission East quadrangular gymnastics meet. Free State totaled 102.5 points and LHS 94.55. Scores for SM East and North were not available.
