Lawrence High sophomore Justin Roberts was named the Sunflower League’s Sophomore of the Year and was the only non-senior to be recognized on the first-team All-League boys basketball team.

Two months ago, Free State High’s girls basketball team was just fighting to stay competitive in games. They fell just short of a trip to the state tournament on Friday night. The Firebirds trailed by four points with under five minutes remaining in the game before going cold from the field in a 48-39 loss to Manhattan in the Class 6A sub-state finals at Manhattan High. Olathe East’s girls basketball team withstood every challenge Free State threw at it through three quarters on Friday night. The Hawks then capped things by converting 11 of 12 free throws in the final period, pulling away for a 47-31 Sunflower League victory. East (11-7) converted 17 of 18 foul shots on the night.
