Column: Firebirds’ strategy bothered Lawrence
December 20, 2014
Kudos to Free State High coach Chuck Law for employing a turn-back-the-clock, clock-eating strategy, and especially to his players for having the discipline to execute their coach’s game plan remarkably well.

FSHS boys basketball pleased with summer progress
July 3, 2014
For a group of players who don’t have much varsity experience and haven’t played in many games together, Free State’s boys basketball team has to be pleased so far this summer.  The Firebirds went 5-3 in the KAMO boys’ team shootout a few weeks ago and also played well against opponents in a summer league at Blue Valley West. By Bobby Nightengale
FSHS boys basketball team adjusts to new roster
June 12, 2014
The Free State High boys basketball team’s summer practices don’t feature many familiar faces who helped the school to the Class 6A state tournament in 2012 or a regional title game in March. Seven Firebirds seniors graduated, leaving little varsity experience on the squad heading into the upcoming season. For some teams, that unknown can be terrifying. However at Free State, plenty of players and coaches are embracing it. By Bobby Nightengale

Lions, Firebirds hit road with state trips on line
March 8, 2014
Lawrence High’s boys basketball players kept it loose in practice on Friday. They needed a day to rest both physically and mentally after beating Gardner-Edgerton, 62-45, in the first-round of Class 6A sub-state on Thursday and hearing that assistant coach Kermit Aldridge had a turn for the worse in his battle with cancer. Now, a win away from a state tournament appearance, they want to re-energize.
