Regional schedules revealed; FSHS soccer to host game

Free State High’s girls soccer team will host one more home game this season. The Firebirds (10-6), a No. 7 seed in the Class 6A Central regional, will face 10th-seeded Wichita South (7-8-1) at 5:30 p.m. Monday.

Free State High baseball seniors Tyler Walmsley, Zach Bickling and Ryan Cantrell jammed a week’s worth of highlights into the final two innings of Tuesday evening’s home baseball game, but it wasn’t quite enough for the Firebirds to prevail. Olathe North defeated Free State, 7-6, in eight innings after the Firebirds’ five-run, two-out rally in the seventh forced the extra inning. By Tom Keegan

Lawrence High softball coach Joe Dee Tarbutton raved about his infielders before the season. They’ve lived up to the billing. It was only a few days ago when Free State High’s baseball team couldn’t get a clutch hit and stranded tons of runners on base. That seemed like ancient history on Saturday afternoon at the River City Baseball Festival. The Firebirds only had four hits, all doubles, but they made each of them count. After drawing 10 walks, FSHS kept clearing the bases in a 8-3 win over Branson, Mo., at Kansas University’s Hoglund Ballpark. By Bobby Nightengale
