J.D. Prochaska hasn’t had the baseball career he envisioned when he graduated from Free State High in 2012, but things are looking up for the former Firebirds pitcher. He recently signed to play Div. I ball at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

Free State High’s girls soccer team will host one more home game this season. The Firebirds (10-6), a No. 7 seed in the Class 6A Central regional, will face 10th-seeded Wichita South (7-8-1) at 5:30 p.m. Monday.

Free State High baseball seniors Tyler Walmsley, Zach Bickling and Ryan Cantrell jammed a week’s worth of highlights into the final two innings of Tuesday evening’s home baseball game, but it wasn’t quite enough for the Firebirds to prevail. Olathe North defeated Free State, 7-6, in eight innings after the Firebirds’ five-run, two-out rally in the seventh forced the extra inning. By Tom Keegan
