Free State High senior Scott Frantz sat down with his parents on Friday to tell them his plan. He was ready to commit to a college. On Monday, the Firebirds’ offensive tackle was ready to announce his plans to everyone else. Frantz orally committed to Kansas State University at the end of his visit to the school. FSHS football goes all out in summer scrimmage

After spending the last week working in non-contact drills, Free State High’s football team finally put on full pads and went up against an opposing team on Thursday. The Firebirds participated in the Baker University football camp Thursday morning and afternoon, held at FSHS. Shawnee Mission East, the Class 6A state runners-up, St. Thomas Aquinas and Shawnee Heights were also at the camp. By Bobby Nightengale
FSHS golfers conclude KJGA Championship

Free State High junior Jack Flynn shot an 8-over par 80 at the Kansas Boys Junior Amateur Championship Thursday at Eagle Bend, adding to his 75 on Wednesday for a total of 155. He finished tied for 51st overall and 15th in the 16-year-old age group.
FSHS boys basketball team adjusts to new roster

The Free State High boys basketball team’s summer practices don’t feature many familiar faces who helped the school to the Class 6A state tournament in 2012 or a regional title game in March. Seven Firebirds seniors graduated, leaving little varsity experience on the squad heading into the upcoming season. For some teams, that unknown can be terrifying. However at Free State, plenty of players and coaches are embracing it. By Bobby Nightengale

College baseball players Garrett Cleavinger, Colin Toalson and Shane Willoughby all shared different versions of the same story last week, before the start of the NCAA Tournament. In their respective clubhouses and locker rooms at Oregon, Kansas and Youngstown State, each Lawrence product looked to a nearby television and saw fellow city native Tim Lewis playing for Maryland in the ACC Tournament.
