- World Company Cup returns to Free State

- For the seventh time in eight years, the World Company Cup belongs to Free State High. The trophy, awarded since 2006 to the school that prevails most often in City Showdowns and other competitions between rivals Lawrence High and Free State, spent the last year on display at LHS. However, the Lions’ claim to the cup proved short-lived, as Free State conquered the Lions, 17-9, in the standings. By Benton Smith

Although senior free safety Joe Dineen still roams the field looking to dish out punishment, the Firebirds lost the services of recent graduates Kyle McFarland and Demarko Bobo on the corners. - Longtime FSHS track coach Heffernan steps aside

- Steve Heffernan recently told some of his Sunflower League colleagues: “Until you’ve been a head track coach, you don’t know what busy is.” The only track and field coach in Free State High history would know, and he will soon find himself occupied with a different kind of workload. This past spring, which culminated with the Firebirds girls winning the Class 6A state championship, was Heffernan’s 16th and final season. He resigned in order to become the new associate principal at FSHS, effective July 1.
