LHS swimmers, divers chase state marks at home meet

Lawrence High sophomore Ashley Ammann finished second in the one-meter dive on Tuesday afternoon at the LHS Invitational. She couldn’t be happier. Ammann scored 186.50 points, enough to qualify for the Class 6A state tournament. She was eight-tenths of a point away from making it last year, and jumped up and down Tuesday when her coach told her the news. By Bobby Nightengale

O-South girls star Kopatich switches commitment from KSU to KU

The MVP of Kansas’ Sunflower League is headed to Kansas University on a women’s basketball scholarship. Kylee Kopatich, a 5-foot-10 junior point guard for Olathe South, orally committed to Bonnie Henrickson’s KU program on Sunday and announced the commitment Monday. Firebirds golf third at MHS Invite; FSHS, LHS compete at SME

Coleman Houk placed 18th as Free State’s golfers took third Monday in the eight-team Manhattan High Invite, while the Firebirds and Lawrence High took 12th and 14th respectively at the Shawnee Mission East Invitational.

Lions’ errors lead to SM East runs, shutout

Lawrence High baseball players knew there wasn’t going to be any room for mistakes Monday against Shawnee Mission East, one of the top teams in the Sunflower League this season. Once they started beating themselves, they stood no chance. The Lions committed three errors in the fifth inning, providing the Lancers with all of their scoring in a 4-0 loss at LHS.
Firebirds baseball jumps league leaders early in 10-1 win

For six games this spring, no Sunflower League baseball team had figured out a way to defeat high-scoring Olathe East High. When Free State capitalized early on a couple of O-East errors Monday evening, however, Firebirds senior pitcher Ryan Stagg had all the room he needed to keep the Hawks off balance, and FSHS flipped the script on the league’s first-place team, winning 10-1.
