- For two hours Sunday morning, over 100 youngsters at the IronKids triathlon were given a bit of special treatment. After completing the final running event, each athlete was given the chance to cross the finish line with their names being called on a P.A. system and rock music playing across the fields at Free State High. According to IronKids race director Ryan Robinson, such attention was exactly the point.

There’s a point in enjoying live sports where the television cannot reach, a point that only being there can give you. On Sunday at the Lawrence Indoor Aquatic Center that idea got the attention of nine youngsters as the Alive with MissionMe triathlon clinic came to town.

- Mackinzie Urish has raced midget cars competitively for five years and has won numerous races. That’s quite an accomplishment considering she’s only 10 years old. Mackinzie races in the Topeka Quarter Midget Association, competing in the Senior Honda and Light 160 heats. Before she climbs into her car, her father, Willie, often gives her some advice. “During the race I’m always told to work on my starts and passes,” Mackinzie said. “Once the race gets going I’m not really focused on anything.”

- For Jayhawk Diving Club divers Logan Kline and Shana Schuelein, hanging out at the pool during an event on the road isn’t always the top priority. Sometimes the humid conditions inside a natatorium can have a negative effect. “It can drain your energy,” Kline said. “So it’s good to get away from the competition and go back to the hotel and hang out. It helps keep your focus.”

- Retirees and businessmen on extended lunch breaks aren’t the only people golfing Monday afternoons at Eagle Bend Golf Course. The course sees a youth movement at about 2 p.m. every Monday this summer when boys and girls between the ages of 12 and 17 tee off for the Junior Nine-Hole League.

- Reece Conklin stepped onto the wrestling mat and sized up his opponent in the championship match of the Kansas State Wrestling Folkstyle Championships Sunday afternoon. All around him at the Kansas Expocentre in Topeka, fans, friends, family members and coaches yelled out words of encouragement. Not that Conklin could hear them.
