- Tracking down team fun, but difficult, task
- Google, cell phone indispensible
- February 16, 2008
- The phone rang for a man I presumed to be Lincoln Minor, the former Kansas University basketball player who played 34 games in the 1987-88 season. “Hello?” the man on the other end answered. “Hi, is this Lincoln?” I asked. “Yes,” he said. “The Lincoln who played basketball for the Kansas Jayhawks?” “No,” the man replied. “This is his father.” Hey, that’s progress.
- Wood: Meier’s mugshot is pure magic
- July 26, 2007
- Clearing out the jam-packed notebook as Big 12 media days wrap up. Amazingly, all 12 of the league’s coaches are optimistic about the 2007 season. :
- Wood: Yankee Stadium must see
- July 17, 2007
- As the brakes squeal, the muffled voice of the New York subway tells you the whereabouts: 161st Street. Yankee Stadium. But, really, no introduction is needed. At the same time the voice chimes in over the crackled speakers, the uptown No. 4 train emerges from the dark tunnel and comes to an above-ground stop.
- Wood: Experience should give Meier edge
- April 19, 2007
- “Meier’s time is now.” Before I get canned for plagiarism, I confess I didn’t write that. Rather, it was the headline of a column written Aug. 17, 2005, by one Tom Keegan. So you tell me, does it make sense that I’m now arguing with this guy over who should be the No. 1 slinger this fall?
- Wood: Big 12 outlook murky
- October 30, 2006
- The Kansas University football team’s bowl possibilities are hazy just based on what the Jayhawks need to do the next three games. But it’s even more muddled considering what the rest of the Big 12 Conference is capable of.
- Wood: Close games vex KU
- Jayhawks must find way to win thrillers to earn bowl berth
- October 9, 2006
- Whatever it is - luck, stamina, heart, pride or poise - Kansas University’s football team better find a quick remedy. And fix it quicker than anything has been fixed. Close games have never reflected well on KU in coach Mark Mangino’s five seasons in Lawrence - especially in Big 12 Conference play. The Jayhawks are 3-8 in league games that are decided by one score. Of those eight losses, Kansas had a lead in the final five minutes of six of them.
- Wood: KU right not to go for two
- October 2, 2006
- Jason Anderson was in the minority - and he couldn’t believe it.
- Wood: Great finishes galore
- September 25, 2006
- Just 48 hours before watching South Florida march downfield in an attempt at a last-second victory Saturday, a great book arrived in the mail documenting the 116 greatest college football finishes since 1970.
- Wood: A guide to wild weekend
- September 11, 2006
- Get your laziness ready. This is once-in-a-lifetime stuff.
- Wood: First ‘06 awards go to trio
- September 4, 2006
- OK, so my game balls aren’t traditional. I’m a little too weird for that. But I think it’s appropriate to recognize effort that may otherwise go unnoticed (or in some cases, wrongly scrutinized). So here are my personal heroes from Kansas University’s football-season-opening victory Saturday:
- Wood: Incidents haunt Relays
- August 2, 2006
- Sigh. The Kansas Relays certainly has seen better days. First, a massive fight at the after-party (bearing the Relays’ name) breaks out at Abe & Jake’s Landing in April. Then, the headline act, sprinter Justin Gatlin, has a positive drug test that was conducted following his leg of the race at our hometown’s meet.
- Wood: Zaniness rampant in Big 12
- July 28, 2006
- Three days. Twelve coaches. Thirty-five players. Some 60 million questions with the words “confidence,” “momentum,” “outlook” or “Kerry Meier” somewhere in it.
- Wood: Big 12 returns to normal
- Expect traditional powers to dominate this fall
- June 27, 2006
- Think a coaching change is a life saver from day one? History has something to say about that.
- Wood: This camera never lies
- June 25, 2006
- Talk about sticking your neck out.
- Wood: ‘Trotter Lee plays it straight
- June 22, 2006
- Here he was, at long last. Mr. Globetrotter, Michael Lee, in the flesh and back in Lawrence to play a pickup game for participants in Bill Self’s basketball camp Wednesday.
