Sword found at Schwegler Elementary; LHS student allegedly strikes staff member

Students at Schwegler Elementary School made an unusual discovery during an afternoon recess on Friday: a sheathed sword attached to a bicycle that had been abandoned in a ditch near the school’s playground, according to Julie Boyle, the school district’s communications director.

No details were available on how the sword got there or to whom it belonged. Lawrence police officers were called to Schwegler, 2201 Ousdahl Road, to remove the sword, Boyle said in an email to media.

In a separate incident in the district, a Lawrence High School student allegedly struck a school staff member Friday and is now facing disciplinary action, Boyle said. She did not specify what the discipline would be.

The incident reportedly occurred when the staff member instructed the student to wait outside the school, 1901 Louisiana St., to be picked up by a parent. A school resource officer assisted the staff member during the incident, Boyle said. No other details were provided.
