Pet dog shot in rural Douglas County

A Douglas County dog was let outside Wednesday and returned home with buckshot in its hindquarters, the dog’s owner reported to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

The dog was shot in the early afternoon after being let out of its home in the 100 block of North 2098 Road for about 30 to 45 minutes, Sgt. Kristen Channel said in an email to the Journal-World. She said a vet treated the dog and determined that its injuries weren’t life-threatening.

Authorities don’t know who shot the dog.

“The circumstances surrounding the dog being shot are unknown, nor do we know who shot the dog, but we’re still investigating the incident,” Channel said Thursday morning.
