A Lawrence man who committed an armed robbery with his brother in 2017 will join him in prison.
Tavaras L. Hunter, 38, was sentenced Tuesday in Douglas County District Court to 10 years in prison followed by three years of post-release supervision, according to Dorothy Kliem, trial assistant for the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office. She said Hunter must also register as a violent offender for 15 years.
Hunter pleaded guilty to aggravated robbery and aggravated battery, both felonies. In exchange, prosecutors dismissed four additional charges he had been facing: aggravated robbery, theft and two counts of aggravated battery.
On March 6, 2017, Hunter and his brother entered an apartment at 2001 W. Sixth St. and robbed two people inside at gunpoint, according to prosecutors. The brothers took wallets, keys, money and marijuana from the victims.
Hunter’s brother Norris Hunter went to trial in December and was convicted of three felonies — two counts of aggravated robbery and one count of aggravated burglary — and three misdemeanors — two counts of battery and one count of theft.
Norris Hunter, who already had a 2004 robbery conviction in Douglas County, was sentenced last month to 19 years in prison.
