A Lawrence Police Department crime scene team investigates Saturday, Jan. 5, 2019, at the Carnegie Building, 200 W. Ninth St.

The Lawrence Police Department is investigating an apparent shooting at the Carnegie Building Saturday morning that left one man wounded.

According to a news release from department spokeswoman Sgt. Amy Rhoads, a Lawrence officer heard what sounded like a gunshot from inside the Carnegie Building, 200 W. Ninth St., about 12:30 a.m. after observing a group of individuals running through a parking lot in the 800 block of Vermont Street. The officer then saw more individuals running from the area.

Other officers arrived and secured the Carnegie Building but found no one injured on the scene, Rhoads said.

A short time later, officers were called to the hospital, where a 19-year-old Topeka man was being examined for what appeared to be a nonlife-threatening single gunshot wound, which investigators believe is related to the Carnegie incident.

The incident remains under investigation, Rhoads said. No arrests have been reported and no other details were available. A Lawrence Police Department crime investigation team remained at the Carnegie Building until shortly after 1 p.m. Saturday.

Police are requesting that anyone with information about the incident call the department at 785-832-7509 or Crime Stoppers of Lawrence and Douglas County at 785-843-TIPS.
