A dented metal grain bin sits in the middle of U.S. Highway 59 on Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2019. The bin was knocked off the trailer of a truck as it went under an overpass.

A truck carrying an oversized load tried but didn’t clear an overpass south of Lawrence Wednesday night.

The truck’s cargo — a large metal grain bin — hit the road above it, knocking the bin off the truck’s trailer, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said in a social media post about 7:20 p.m. Wednesday. The accident happened on U.S. Highway 59 at the intersection of County Road 460/North 650 Road, about six and a half miles south of Lawrence.

No one was hurt, the sheriff’s office said, but traffic was slowed while crews dealt with removing the bin from the highway.

Photos from the scene, shared by the sheriff’s office, showed a large cylindrical bin with a funnel-shaped bottom — and a very crumpled top.
